Martin Luther King Jr. is a non-fiction informational book covering all about Martin Luther King Jr. The book starts with getting the readers attention by asking intriguing questions. It covers his early life, how he became an advocate for equal rights, and his final days. The book is full of real pictures, a timeline, glossary, words to know, and interesting facts about M.L.K Jr. ( ) This is a fantastic reading book for kids in late elementary school who want to learn about black history. It follows MLK and the history of him and his family and the actions around the civil rights movement. It is a book that I wish I had when I was in school to have it easily explain to me the different parts of the movement and the changes that went around in our country. In this children's informational text about Martin Luther King Jr., there is a solid balance of text, pictures, honest history, and important information that can be referenced at any point in time. This is a text I see being used in the classroom, but for reference to cite when creating a project. While there might be the occasional student who would read this for pure entertainment, I believe that this is a text that is going to primarily be used for citing. And that is also how the book is structured--there is no plot, rather, there is just information about him and the incredible impact he has on American History. My one complaint about this book was the use of black and white photographs instead of colored ones. Using black and white photos creates this narrative that the civil rights movement was from a long time ago when it really wasn't. I believe that when educating the youth of America, we need to show them that this is not a concept foreign or long ago.
