This is the eighth book in the Scottish crime series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Jack Logan.

Jack is back in Inverness after his “sabbatical” from the police profession. His Major Investigations team now consists of Detective Inspector Ben Forde, Detective Sergeant Hamza Khaled, Detective Constable Tyler Neish, Detective Constable Sinead Bell, and Constable David Davidson helping with Exhibits. They are called to assist on a new case in Fort William after the body of a young woman calling herself Hermione Gray found hanging from the monument at Glenfinnan.

Jack has also been assigned by his boss to look after the formerly disgraced Detective Superintendent Bob Hoon, who has been acting suicidal. Hoon ends up joining the team in Fort William so they can keep an eye on him.

The actual identity of the murder victim turns out to be quite a surprise and adds unexpected complications to solving the case. In addition, two members of the team become quite endangered.

Evaluation: This book is more focused on the personal developments with the team than the crimes, and while there are still plenty of scary moments, twists, and tension, there were also quite a few laugh-out-loud passages. This series is addictive for those who appreciate thrillers. ( )

I love the DCI Logan series and this is a worthy addition. It made me laugh and cry. A great read ( )
