Anita Diamant's international bestseller "The Red Tent" brilliantly re-created the ancient world of womanhood. Diamant brings her remarkable storytelling skills to "Good Harbor" -- offering insight to the precarious balance of marriage and career, motherhood and friendship in the world of modern women. The seaside town of Gloucester, Massachusetts is a place where the smell of the ocean lingers in the air and the rocky coast glistens in the Atlantic sunshine. When longtime Gloucester-resident Kathleen Levine is diagnosed with breast cancer, her life is thrown into turmoil. Frightened and burdened by secrets, she meets Joyce Tabachnik -- a freelance writer with literary aspirations -- and a once-in-a-lifetime friendship is born. Joyce has just bought a small house in Gloucester, where she hopes to write as well as vacation with her family. Like Kathleen, Joyce is at a fragile place in her life. A mutual love for books, humor, and the beauty of the natural world brings the two women together. They share their personal histories, and help each other to confront scars left by old emotional wounds. With her own trademark wisdo… (mehr)

A story of two women who bond over difficulties in their lives. A so-so book ( )

Strong first half, faded fast. Too dang bad. ( )

Kathleen and Joyce meet at Good Harbour on the Massachusetts coast. Kathleen has been diagnosed with breast cancer and Joyce is struggling with her career and her adolescent daughter. Their friendship is the core of the novel and the highs and lows when the two of them are together are joyful. The book is about these women and how they are coping with changes and their families. It was a pleasant read. ( )

I enjoyed this book about a friendship between two women very much, despite the fact that the plot was not a new one. I knew in advance that it was completely different than the Red Tent, so I did not try to compare it. I identified with both women at certain points, and I think many women older than 45 will agree with me. The book was very spiritual in how the characters understand each other and respect the others faith. The only thing that bothered me slightly is that everything gets tied up too fast and too neatly in the end to be realistic. Otherwise it is a very entertaining and relaxing read. ( )

I was disappointed in this. I have loved Diamant's other novels but this one was lacking. It is the story of a friendship between two women, one suffering from breast cancer and the other dealing with a failing marriage and a difficult teen. Nothing original here. ( )
