Kathleen and Joyce meet at Good Harbour on the Massachusetts coast. Kathleen has been diagnosed with breast cancer and Joyce is struggling with her career and her adolescent daughter. Their friendship is the core of the novel and the highs and lows when the two of them are together are joyful. The book is about these women and how they are coping with changes and their families. It was a pleasant read. ( )
I enjoyed this book about a friendship between two women very much, despite the fact that the plot was not a new one. I knew in advance that it was completely different than the Red Tent, so I did not try to compare it. I identified with both women at certain points, and I think many women older than 45 will agree with me. The book was very spiritual in how the characters understand each other and respect the others faith. The only thing that bothered me slightly is that everything gets tied up too fast and too neatly in the end to be realistic. Otherwise it is a very entertaining and relaxing read. ( )
I was disappointed in this. I have loved Diamant's other novels but this one was lacking. It is the story of a friendship between two women, one suffering from breast cancer and the other dealing with a failing marriage and a difficult teen. Nothing original here. ( )
