Locryn Barnes knows what it means to be a fixer for Torus Intercession. Torus is the place that people in need turn to for everything from bodyguards to chaperones, and God knows Loc is the kind of man who'd rather play human shield against a bullet than spend even a moment of his life as a glorified babysitter. Which is why he tells a prospective client, in no uncertain terms, that he's not the right fixer for the job when Torus is tapped to play what amounts to a life coach for a spoiled, burned out, fresh-out-of-rehab rock star. Nick Madison has been living on the edge since he was seventeen. Now, at twenty-six, aimless and on the verge of losing everything, he can't seem to give a damn. When he wakes up one afternoon, hungover and strung out, to find a stranger in his house ordering everyone around like he owns the place, Nick is sure he's woken up in his own little corner of purgatory. Nick is determined to prove he doesn't need anyone's help, least of all from the walking, talking definition of infuriating. Nick has met every challenge and is finally ready to spread his wings and fly, but not alone, which means another daunting challenge to face. Now, Nick needs to convince the fixer that the rock star is his happily-ever-after. Which could prove to be Nick's biggest challenge yet.… (mehr)

The ending sort of petered out, which wasn't as satisfying as it might have been, but overall I quite enjoyed this couple and their character growth and falling for each other. I didn't expect to become so attached to the musician, but he was actually pretty endearing after his first struggles. ( )

I put off reading this for a long time because the blurb didn't sound good, I loved the first book and I didn't like that he had hurt Brann (although that gets resolved in this book) and other people were complaining about how bad this was.

But blurbs are terrible, and no matter how well it's written it will never actually convey the tone or premise of the book. And I have to stop listening to randos online.

This might be my favorite book of MC so far. It is not at all what I expected, and it was complex, thoughtful and more nuanced than MC usually is (not a complaint). Strong themes of child abuse, animal abuse, found families, spiraling anxieties and insecurities, mental health and addiction. ( )

If you have any aversion to Mary Calmes's style, this is an intense version of it.

Obviously, I enjoy her heroes and their people, but even I was slightly put off by all the appraising and yelling dialogue tags. The main reason this is four instead of five stars, though, is because the Loc seen previously and the Loc who is our MC here seem like different men. I'd have to read the three books again closer together to be sure, but he feels less confrontational, and that's cheating, if true. The off feeling is valid regardless.

Also regardless, I enjoyed the story anyway, including Loc's mom, and Nick's backstory and that fallout was, I thought, well done. I particularly appreciated that Loc also needs help. I didn't expect it, and it was the more satisfying for that. Oh, and the whole not forgiving nasty people. That's a big thumbs-up. ( )

A story of what love can do if given the proper chance. I love the two characters of Locryn and Nick. Well...not Nick so much at the beginning, but as he matured and wanted to change his lifestyle, he became a dream come true, not only for Locryn but for the reader. The remainder of the story was fantastic. The reader will need to start at book #1 because each book builds on the last one and introduces the group of men, fixers from Torus Intercession, who are more than mere bodyguards. In each of the following books they all find their "only one." with a really beautiful story. There is always a nice twist to the relationship development. Each of the men is supposed to leave when the job is done, but after the first book you figure out that that just isn't going to happen...nor do you want it to. That's not a spoiler because that's what good romance writing is all about...a great "Happy Ever After" after the turbulence of reaching that goal. If you have never read a Mary Calmes book, check out all her others... if you are okay with a same sex couple...you have a real treat in store. ( )
