I didn't know much of the Progressive era and this book has put an end to that. Well written and very interesting. Aside from being 3 times as long, and covering only 20 years, I'd rank this right up there with American Colossus by Brands, and you know that's pretty good what with AC having a freakin' train chase scene. 2963 America Enters the World: A People's History of the Progressive Era and World War I Volume Seven, by Page Smith (read 8 Mar 1997) This volume of Smith's massive opus covers the years from 1901 to about 1921. Most of the chapters in this book I found very good. Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were the dominating figures in the period, and the author much prefers Wilson over Roosevelt, as do I. The behavior of TR from 1913 to his death on Jan 6, 1919, has nothing to commend it. The seven volumes of this work have a total of 6823 pages--which is a lot. I'd say about 5000 of those pages were really interesting reading. [I read the final volume, Volume 8 on May 9, 2006.] Zeige 3 von 3 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
