With one mad yell the mob, armed with stumps and bits torn from desks, surge away down the pasage, trampling the masters under foot. A buket of water fall on GRIMES and the term end in a series of wizard rags and japes. Cars arrive, driven by parents with drawn, white faces. Nigel Molesworth is dragging St. Custard's into the 20th century in the company of 'felow pupils, their doting maters, pompous paters and any others who are interested', via the Elizabethans and the Wild West. Most importantly, he has some important lessons in how to treat Girls, what to do with a tee-vee, what a holiday will really involve, and how to survive the uranium age that is sure to hit any time now. Third of the Molesworth books; I suspect the humour was already dated in 1976. Though maybe not all of it: “‘Reality,’ sa molesworth 2, ‘is so unspeakably sordid it make me shudder’.” ( )

This book looks like a children's book, but it isn't, really. Native English-speaking teenagers can probably read it, and they might enjoy it, but it is more likely written for adults. This book requires an English grammar school background to fully appreciate the humour, not just because of the language but particularly the English school culture. Therefore the book will probably be difficult for Chinese readers to fully understand and enjoy. Even I was surprised to see that this book was first published in 1956. It demonstrates that the type of humour of Monty Python, Mr Bean, The Diary of Adrian Mole and Harry Potter has a long tradition. ( )

There are a couple of memorable bits (Sir Francis Drake trying to sneak a pike through Customs), but it doesn't seem as funny now as it did when I was eleven, and even then, it was not the funniest of Willans and Searle's sequels to the classic "Down with Skool". MB 18-ix-2008 ( )

The third book in the Molesworth series of satires on English boarding school life. Superb ink cartoons by Ronald Searle
Chapters include:
How to be a young Elizabethan
school life through history
school life in the future
guide to girls, and life in girls' schools
all about horse-racing
the Molesworth Master Meter
school holidays at home
life after school: careers.
All very amusing, though not quite as good as the first 2 books. ( )
