Survive the Night -- I had to survive reading this book! How does Riley Sager get to me this way? Every book just pulls me in so quickly and I'm so invested in the stories and the characters that I get little else done until the book is over. But I don't WANT the book to be over because IT IS SO GOOD!! Charlie is a university student looking for a ride back home to Ohio mid semester after her best friend and roommate has died suddenly. Right off, we don't know how Maddie has died, but we see it has to be tragic (young woman, and Charlie keeps expressing guilt/woe). So, we get deeper into the story as the ride home progresses and of course, there's yelling at Charlie for doing dumb things, like we all do at the characters in scary movies, but in a little different way, because Charlie is a little different. The only problem I had with the whole book is I sometimes had trouble following when it was real life and when it was a Charlie movie. Okay, yes, sometimes Charlie had the same problem, but especially near the end, things were a little too jumbled, switching back and forth. Or were they? Did they switch at all? I don't know. In any case, great story, great characters, great ending!! 5 stars ( )

1991. Charlie's best friend was murdered by a serial killer. She's breaking down and can't wait for her boyfriend to drive her home so she gets a ride off the campus rideboard. Overnight, NJ to OH. And maybe the stranger driving is the killer.

It's tightly written. It reminded me of Gaslight, Rear Window, and Vertigo. Everyone is an unreliable narrator. It was tense but not scary. 100% recommend. ( )

I'm so torn about this book. Mostly I didn't like it. If the author was writing from a satirical perspective based on the fact that this is supposed to be like an 80s/90s classic slasher style movie, then I might give it more benefit of the doubt. It was a quick read, it kept me interested, but it did definitely make me roll my eyes on more than one occasion. There were a lot of "but, why?" moments and not enough "oh, whoa!" moments. Again, the ending was either clever or a cop out. ( )

Were the characters believable? Eh.
But were they clever? Hell, no.
Did I need a lot of suspension of disbelief? Oh yes.
Did I see the plot twists coming? From a mile away.
Did I enjoy reading this book? Hell, yes!

This was a wild ride and also a quick read. I liked the execution and although all of the above applies, I enjoyed the experience of reading this story a lot and I was never bored or annoyed. So I guess you will have to decide for yourself if this is for you. ( )

Riley Sager has set a high bar for suspense novels in this book. Charlie is a female college student whose best friend, Maddy, has been murdered by an unknown serial killer. Charlie has guilt and grief after this horrific crime, and eventually leaves the campus bound for the safety of her grandmother's home in Ohio. She finds a ride on the message board when she connects with Josh, who is also headed for Ohio. He picks her up at 9 p.m. and they begin their journey Charlie realizes that Josh may not be the person he purports to be. This is a night filled with numerous twists and turns, which include Charlie's fugue states into movie scenarios. ( )
