Merged review:
This episode wasn't quite as strong as the others in my opinion. It mostly progressed the story line along, but I didn't get a lot of character development out of it.
Merged review:
This episode is mostly action, with our main characters going about a carefully laid out plan. It ends with a cliffhanger.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I read and reviewed the first seven chapters or episodes alone. By the time I got to reading the remaining items, Goodreads had combined all of these into one.
I greatly enjoyed this series - I think that it is the best Magic: The Gathering literature that I have ever read, and it got better as I got into it. I have read War of the Spark before I read these (they came out after it was released, even though they occur in the story before that book), and I greatly prefer this author and his mode of story telling. One of the chief reasons is that Django writes from the perspective of the planeswalkers for a good portion of the story, and brings their strengths and weaknesses to the forefront. Also, heroes and villains are mixed - most characters are flawed, and motivations are uncertain and varied. I can imagine reading a follow-up book with these same characters and find myself pulling for different characters. That would be really interesting to see with characters like Domi Rade, Dovin Baan and Teysa.
I have seen the reviews for Forsaken, and I am not very excited about reading it, having experienced both of these stories now. I hope that Django is enlisted to write more Magic fiction. These stories that he wrote are exactly the kind of drama I was expecting for War of the Spark after seeing the movie trailer for the set. ( )
