What a fun and creative retelling of the traditional story of Puss in Boots. This version is set in Texas and gives the southern vibe to it. As I was reading the text, I had to read it in an southern accent including the word, "Y'all". It made me laugh because you have to talk southern while reading a southern book. This book is interesting and quite funny, but i may be difficult for children to understand the southern slang if they aren't from the south. As I picked up this book, I imagine Puss in Boots from Shrek with big eyes. But as I was reading the illustrations were set in Texas and the Cat looked nothing like the classic Puss in Boots. It can teach kids that you can always change the classic fairy tales into anything you want. ( )

A western version of Puss in Boots that takes place in Texas where Puss makes a man rich. Puss originally belonged to Dan’s father who passed away. After his father’s death, Dan took Puss as the last thing he received from his father. Dan and Puss set out on the road with no destination in mind. As days grew long Dan grew weary from his travels and began making plans to cook Puss for some chili. Puss heard the plans for his future and told Dan he had a better plan saying all he needed were cowboy boots and a sack. Once Puss has his boots he sets out and catches a turkey and a possum in his sack. Bringing these gifts to Mr. Patoot, a big oilman in Texas. Puss tells Mr. Patoot the gifts are from Dan, “the biggest, the richest, and the most powerful rancher of the Lone Star State.” Puss becomes well known with Mr. Patoot and he looks forward to seeing Puss with the gifts every so often. One-day Puss’s plan goes into full force when he tells Dan to pretend he is drowning as Mr. Patoot’s limo passes by. Mr. Patoot stops to save Dan and they ride off in the limo. Mr. Patoot and Dan pass cattle and oil rigs, which Puss has told the workers to say that Dan owns. Their last stop would be a big ranch house which Dan also owns with twisted help from Puss. The men all enjoy bar-be-que and have a good time Dan’s nice house. Puss does not party with them, instead he takes off his boots and relaxes, his job was done. The language was very western in the text since it is taking place in Texas. Also, the illustrations portray hot, dry Texas during a summer. ( )

There was once a father that had three sons. The father left some inheritance to each son, and the youngest son named Dan received a cat. Dan believed that the cat was not useful to him, and he considered cooking the cat. The cat heard this, and decided to help Dan become rich. The cat asked Dan to bring him some cowboy boots, a sack, and a burlap. With the sack the cat went to the forest and caught a wild turkey, and brought it to richest oil man in Texas. The name of the of the man was Patoot, and he was happy to receive a turkey like that because it reminded him of his childhood. The cat brought him other gifts as well, and one day Cat knew that Mr. Patoot was going to be around a certain area, so Cat told Dan to be in a stream relaxing. While Mr. Patoot’s limousine was passing by, Cat stopped the car to ask for someone to help drowning Dan. Mr. Pattot was with his daughter, and Dan had a picnic with them. Cat told Mr. Patoot that Dan was rich, so when Dan, Mr Patoot, and Rosie drove through the towns Mr. Patoot asked who the cattles and oil fields belong to. Cat was smart and asked the people who worked in the oil and cattle lands to tell Mr. Patoot that they worked for Dan. Eventually Cat went to the real owner of the cattle’s and oil fields, and ate him. Mr. Pattoot was impressed by all the lands that Dan owned, and Dan asked Rosie to marry him in the barbecue that they were at. Cat in the meantime was resting in his new room. The book displays the regions of Texas and its foods. The clothing of the characters reflect Texas, and the Cat reflects the cowboys of Texas. ( )

This is a different folk tale then I am used to. It was interesting and I struggled with the language a little. ( )

This country western version of the fairy tale, Puss in Boots, is hilarious. The cat that was inherited by a farmer's son. The cat seems worthless to all of the sons of the deceased father. The cat, Puss in Cowboy Boots, becomes very helpful. He has a plan to make his new owner, Dan, seem rich. Dan ends up falling in love and living happily ever after. The author uses funny western slang and descriptive words to add interest to the writing.
I would use this book to do a comparison to the popular version. Students could use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the two. ( )
