Fiction. Mystery. Thriller. HTML:In this heart-pounding and sharply written thriller from J.A. Jance, the "grand master of the genre" (The Providence Journal), Ali Reynolds's personal life is thrown into turmoil just as two men show up on the sceneâ??a former employee of her husband's who has just been released from prison and a serial killer who sets his sights a little too close to home.
Mateo Vega, a one-time employee of Ali Reynold's husband, B. Simpson, has spent the last sixteen years of his life behind bars. According to the courts, he murdered his girlfriend. But Mateo knows that her real killer is still on the loose, and the first thing he's going to do when he gets a taste of freedom is track him down.

After being granted parole, a wary Mateo approaches Stu Ramey of High Noon Enterprises for a reference letter for a job application, but to his surprise, Stu gives him one better: He asks him to come on board and work for B. once again. Just as Mateo starts his new job, though, chaos breaks out at High Noonâ??a deadbeat tenant who is in arrears has just fled, and tech expert Cami Lee has gone missing.

As Ali races to both find a connection between the two disappearances and help Mateo clear his name with the help of PI J.P. Beaumont, tragedy strikes in her personal life, and with lives hanging in the balance, she must thread the needle between good and evil before it's too

Another solid book in the Ali Reynolds series. There are three main stories, making this a bit crowded: Mateo Vega is paroled after plea bargaining guilty to a Murder II charge and spending 16 years in jail because he refused to admit his guilt. After living simply working for a thrift store, he asks Stuart Ramey for a recommendation, at a time when High Noon Enterprises is seeking to add staff. A second story involves a serial killer, whose killings are interspersed throughout the novel, who has enormous rage and who is a deadbeat tenant of High Noon, eventually culminating in a life-threatening confrontation. Finally, there is a family story about aging and dementia that deals with very personal issues, especially relevant as people are living much longer lives. Frigg once again plays an important role in the outcomes. ( )

I had almost decided to stop reading J.A. Jance books because they were becoming so violent and bloody, and then along comes the 16th book in the Ali Reynolds series. Not only does it bring interesting characters to the forefront, but it also introduces the family tragedy of dementia when Ali’s father is experiencing symptoms. And best of all, my favorite Jance character is involved in the search to bring justice to a High Noon employee who most likely served a 16-year sentence in a Washington state prison for a murder he swears he did not commit. Cami, the petite Asian tech sleuth employed by High Noon also shows her grit, strength, and determination when she’s kidnapped. Although this book can be read as a standalone, the development of characters in the past books will increase your enjoyment of the storyline. ( )
