Frank Viola tells the story of the New Testament church, beginning with the book of Acts and inserting insights from the Epistles and Revelation. He also includes historical information from the time period. While I liked the approach, he's not a very good storyteller. Sometimes the narrative seems a bit choppy. Each missionary journey was preceded by a map, helping readers visualize apostolic journeys. I'm not sure I would say this story is "untold" as most of it is written in the New Testament; however, the arrangement makes it useful for a chronological Bible study of this portion of the Bible. This is a fantastic telling of the events of the New Testament Church in chronological order, instead of the layout of the written New Testament.

Find the correct layout, and suddenly the events of the New Testament Church following the death of Jesus, and the writing of the New Testament come to life.

This book puts it all into the order it should be read in. With the background as to why each book was written. Paul's letter's suddenly come alive with their meaning! I've heard many a Christian state that Paul is so contradictory in his writings. Well, suddenly there is no contradiction if you understand to whom he was writing and why he was writing to them!

Learn how each of the Apostle's dies. Learn what the New Testament Church itself was like. How it nearly faced extinction thanks to Nero!

This has been one of the best Bible helps I have read in a L-O-N-G time!

This is an absolute must read for any New Testament scholar, whether that be a layman, or a minister!

Not overly impressed with this book. I like the topic and the premise, but not the writing style. Also, as an audio book, I wonder how effective it is without the foot notes, etc.

Ons beeld van hoe de evangelieën, Handelingen en de brieven van de apostelen zich tot elkaar verhouden, wat de context en dus herbruikbaarheid van teksten is en hoe de jonge kerk zich ontwikkelde, kan behoorlijk verstoord zijn. Invloeden zijn bijvoorbeeld het op de in de canon opgenomen volgorde van de boeken en brieven zijn (de brieven van Paulus zijn op lengte gesorteerd), de ellendige indeling in hoofdstukken, perikopen en verzen. Of het idee, dat alleen de Handelingen historie vertellen, en dat het zicht dus ophoudt met een Paulus die 2 jaar gevangen in Rome zit, of alle discussies over datering en auteurschap van nieuwtestamentische brieven. Hoewel er best handboeken zijn bij elk bijbelboek, en je in moderne bijbelvertalingen vóór elk boek een introductie vindt met historische context, datering, (vermoedelijke) auteur, blijft dat een fragmentarische benadering. Frank Viola heeft bijbellezers een enorme dienst bewezen door de historische lijnen vanaf de komst van Jezus te beschrijven als 'The Untold Story of the New Testament Church'. Bij lezing van het boek, en parallel de bijbehorende boeken en brieven, ga je snappen waarom de brieven aan de Corinthiërs geschreven zijn, wie nu Prisca en Aquila zijn, en dat Timotheüs niet die eeuwige jongeling is gebleven. De in de bijbel beschreven geschiedenis hield met Handelingen niet op, maar wordt juist verrijkt door de nu in samenhang gebrachte informatiebrokken vaak uit de aanhef en afsluiting of terloopse opmerkingen, instructies en overpeinzingen in de brieven. Oneindige discussies over de doorn in het vlees van Paulus, de uit verband gerukte teksten over het Heilig Avondmaal uit 1 Corinthiërs 11 vervallen gewoon! En ontdek hoeveel tijd de apostelen namen voor gemeentestichting. Viola's boek is een ware herontdekking van onze wortels als Gemeente en een waardevolle, hernieuwde kennismaking met het Nieuwe Testament. ( )
