This book is phenomenal. You just can't go wrong with Priscilla Shirer. My biggest takeaway was that God accepts full responsibility for speaking to us; we don't have to nag Him into communicating with us. However, it's our responsibility to listen and obey. God speaks to be obeyed, not just to be heard. It seems elementary, but because it's completely contrary to our sinful human nature, it's revolutionary. But that's our God - revolutionary love. ( )

I appreciate Priscilla Shirer's writing style. She manages to come across as warm, but not wise-crackin' faux-friend as seems to be the trend among Christian female authors. She's neither aloof and unapproachable teaching Yoda (as she who will not be named) or empty prosperity-gospel promises (another she, unnamed). This is an intelligent and straightforward scripturally-based perspective.

This isn't a 'Conversations with God' or 'Jesus Calling' kind of book and it's no substitute for having your own personal relationship with God. It gives insight and scriptural evidence into how to discern between direction from God and distraction. I'm paraphrasing her points, but a couple of points that stuck with me:

- God is focused on the today and right now, rather than past or future.
- God isn't a one and done. He wants you to 'hear' him, so repeats the same theme in multiple ways (scripture, preaching, Christian mentor/friend) to confirm.
- Sometimes, we think God's not answering, but it's because we're in constant dialogue without stopping to listen and reflect.

I think this book is written for Christians on the more mature side of the spectrum (in their faith, not necessarily in years) who already have a healthy foundational prayer life, but may need a refresher in intentional listening. If that feels like you - recommended. ( )

I picked up this workbook because a friend invited me to join a Women's Bible Study group at our church. I am very glad she did! It was a 6 week course that we did and it was brief yet deep. It is not a study to just scratch the surface of Christian fluff, this is very interactive. This workbook was also easy to keep up with daily as the "homework" was only a couple of pages per day.

Priscilla Shirer gives stories that relate to the study as well as stories that are easy to relate to. I did not expect to learn so much from this study and I look forward to reading her other books. She has a way of teaching biblical principles by showing where they come from as well as making them applicable to modern day life. I would recommend this book for any Christian looking to dig a little deeper into their faith. I would also recommend this for any non-Christian who may be curious about Christianity. ( )

Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God is Speaking by Priscilla Shirer is a fantastic book that shows ways that God does still speak to us today if we will only take time to listen.

Ms Shirer does an absolutely amazing job in explaining how we can hear God through his word, how God may use others to confirm what He is trying to tell you.

There are interesting chapter challenges at the end of each chapter for us to try that will bring us closer to God and recognizing when He is speaking to us.

I personally remember a time when I thought a person was crazy that said that they had heard from God, but He does still speak to us His word his very much alive!

I enjoyed this book from start to finish, as it confirmed for me what I was already experiencing. Can't wait to share this book with others who want to learn how to tell when God is speaking.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is...
"He speaks. God speaks. Your Lord and Savior speaks. To you. So wake up expecting. Arrive expecting. Come expecting. Live expecting. Never stop...Expecting."

I received a free copy from Moody Publishers in exchange for my honest review. ( )

How to Recognize When God is Speaking

Ms. Shirer does an excellent job in explaining how we hear God through His Word. She speaks from personal experience and empathizes well with the reader. She includes personal stories and stories from friends to back up the concepts. Of course, plenty of scripture is used as well.

I like the way she emphasizes that God speaks primarily through His Word. But she also does briefly go into some other ways He speaks and the need for confirmations. She believes in prophetic words and included an example for that but this book is not about prophetic things in general. What is not included is any discussion of dreams or visions or anything along those lines.

In general I found this book to be challenging, true, honest, and real and a good way to solidify your grounding in the Word. She included talking about the importance of obedience and not only the how to hear God but the why He wants to talk to us, too.

This book would be excellent for someone who thinks they’ve never heard God’s voice before and would be a very good refresher for those who have heard His voice. It would also be good for charismatic/prophetic people who may be focusing too much on the spectacular and have lost their mooring in the Word.
