A series of concise military biographies, each volume includes all of the important details and addresses a central organising theme to help the reader understand which aspects of a subject's character, background, or behaviour contributed to his or her success. These books will serve as a starting point for any novice reader who wishes to pursue a more sophisticated course of study of the subject. “Santa Anna: A Curse upon Mexico” by Robert Scheina is my third stimulating installment in the Brassey/Potomac military profile series and I can’t wait to read the next publication. In this edition Mr. Scheina eruditely traverses Santa Anna’s rise and fall from Mexican power and politics with hitherto unknown –at least to me- facts and figures which I found astounding. However what truly took me aback, were how so many familiar names from American politics and the American Civil War kept cropping up playing key roles in Santa Anna’s fortunes and many misfortunes. If you haven’t picked up any of these quick and dirty biographies and you are interested in military figures, I definitely recommend them. ( )
