"The Edge of Thirteen" was a very accessible, coming-of-age story for younger teens. The fact it was written by Aussie author, Nova Weetman, was a bonus.

I think many girls could identify with Clem as she battles with new physical, emotional and social changes that come when on the cusp of adolescence. I loved that Clem was nerdy and had a passion for flora but, at the same time, often felt overwhelmed and unsure of herself. As a Teacher Librarian myself, I was thrilled at the positive role the library and librarian played.

Gentle and emotional, "The Edge of Thirteen" was an honest portrayal of early adolescence which will definitely be popular with tween girls. A sweet read. ( )

Clem is starting Year Eight, dealing with change and friendships, and with wanting more independence at home. This is poignant, sometimes painfully, astute about the experience of being thirteen. I wavered between “this is beautiful” and “this is embarrassing HOW DARE ANYONE COMMIT IT TO PAPER”. (I exaggerate, but only slightly.)

It’s refreshing to read something Australian. And I was interested in how it’s about a family who lost their house in a bushfire, but neither the fire nor its aftermath are the focus of this story -- the fire obviously not easily forgotten, it still affects them, but it’s not a dominating force.

[Dad] explained to me that these forests are made up of layers of vegetation. Those seeking light grow the tallest -- usually the eucalypts -- and they stretch their branches as high as they can to chase the sun. This upper storey protects the smaller plants from the wind.
The second level includes the tree ferns and the shorter, bushier plants. They come up to the waist of the tall trees. Then the bottom layer is the forest floor covered with decomposing litter and branches that support the growth of the fungi and moss and small ferns. Down here it’s well shaded.
It’s a bit like my friends and me. There’s Ellie stretching up to the sun, her long legs catapulting her above the rest of us, as she tries to protect us from being buffeted by the world. Bridge is next, chasing after Elie but not quite as tall, filling the space with loudness and laughter. I’m on the ground, a bit in the dark about where I’m supposed to be going, always the seedling trying to grow but slower than everyone else.

Clem is hanging out to catch up with her friends after being apart during the summer holidays. But when they are reunited, everything has changed - her friends are all about boys and bras and she feels left behind. Clem makes friends with a boy at school called Tom and then suddenly everyone is putting pressure on them to become a couple. At school camp, Clem does something stupid and is mortified when everything goes wrong. Its hard being thirteen.
The edge of thirteen pays homage to the Fleetwood Mac song "Edge of Seventeen"as there are a couple of references to Fleetwood Mac in the book.
All-in all this was a nice coming of age story set in the now with Clem throwing herself at a boy who SPOILER ALERT turns out to be gay, and having to grow up quickly to overcome her embarrassment.
