Reading the sermons of C.H. Spurgeon places us in the middle of the 19th century in the heart of London and into the pulpit of a man who through the power of his preaching not only had a large following in his day but still influences thousands through the circulation of his books on the internet and in bookstores. Although I have not read his biography, his character and lifestyle are plain to see through his sermons. He had absolute devotion to his Lord. His intimacy with life's problems and the means of overcoming shows that he struggled as we and shares with us the means by which he overcame. His illustrations and examples using the simple objects of everyday life are without parallel and bring a vivid and helpful force to his message. His message is not an easy one to modern ears accustomed to a more accomodating, liberal view of scripture. But the staying power of Spurgeon's sermons rests upon his adherence to what the Bible actually says rather than what we would like it to say. He is able to easily preach a hour long sermon on one sentence in the Bible showing us how much reflection and study can produce. It seems he didn't need to borrow from others for his sermon material nor need to repeat old sermons such was his continual supply of new inspiration. Highly recommended for clergy and lay alike.
