The brutal hit-skip death of a young woman is written off as an accident until 1940s private investigator Maggie Sullivan finds signs pointing to murder. Charlotte Littlefield, a girl with "a past" was about to marry into one of Dayton, Ohio's, most prominent families and was staying with her future in-laws to get better acquainted and smooth her rough edges. Did someone in the household object to her upcoming union? A frightened, incoherent phone call made moments before she fled to her death suggests another possibility: Charlotte had seen - or heard - something she shouldn't have. Maggie picks her way through a mansion filled with suspects. One wing houses a laboratory where the head of the family and his staff work on a hush-hush project which the War Department eagerly awaits as the war in Europe nears its end. Upstairs, his once-vibrant wife languishes in the aftermath of polio. Their three grown children are a tangle of resentments, jealousy and anger. A second murder raises the...… (mehr)

As a female private investigator in Dayton, Ohio, in April 1945, Maggie Sullivan has had some unusual cases and had some unusual clients. When Mrs. Salmon invited her to lunch at a very upper-class country club, Maggie was about to meet some people who would quickly move to the top of her list.
Mrs. Salmon was the most exclusive madam. Charlotte, one of her girls had left a month ago because she was going to marry Jack Barrett, the son of one of Dayton’s wealthy families, the Barrett’s.. She was moving to their home so that Charlotte and the Barrett family could get to know each other before the wedding.
The week before, Charlotte had been killed by a hit-and-run driver. The police were not doing anything with the case and Mrs. Salmon want Maggie to investigate to find if it was a random hit and run or if she was murdered.
Maggie interviewed all the people at the home, family and employees, as well as the others living at Mrs. Salmon’s house. It was a very diverse and interesting mix of people with a couple of nasty snobs in the family.
For followers of the series, Maggie sees her former boyfriend, Mike Connelly.and she hasn’t heard from Heebs, her homeless, teenage occasional helper, who is now in the service, for a couple of months.
As usual, M. Ruth Myers presents a realistic picture of life in Dayton as WWII nears the end and President Roosevelt dies.
Definitely worth a read. ( )

1945 Dayton, Ohio. Maggie Sullivan is asked by madam Mrs Salmon to investigate the death of a previous employee - twenty-two year old Charlotte Littlefield. She was about to marry Jack, the second son of the wealthy Barrett family. Charlotte was killed in a car accident, or was it.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery. Another good addition to the series which can easily be read as a standalone story ( )
