Adorable cutesy Christmas story, nice and short in a good way too ( ) Confession: I had the wrong idea about this novella when I picked it up. I'd glanced at a teaser blurb that had me thinking the heroine had reached her "change of life," so I'd expected someone older than the maybe early- to mid-thirties Ivy. I also thought the story would focus more on the mystery of the note, like with an involved search on Ivy's part. But she doesn't do that much searching or investigating. This turned out to be much more of a standard "big city girl moving to a small town and getting settled in at Christmastime" story. The style is rather on the nose here and there, and some spots have minor repetition or continuity issues. For instance, Ivy's romantic interest asks her late in the story, "You cook?" as if it's a surprise that she's offering to cook for him. But she already offered to cook a neighborly dinner for him before in an earlier chapter, and he agreed at the time that it would be "a start" for them in place of an actual dinner date. So... Speaking of Ivy's romantic interest, there's one "fade to black" scene between them, but I don't feel like they have the time together or the chemistry that really warrants even that much. Their relationship just doesn't develop into something that compelling or stirring to lead up to that point. Also, there's a small amount of language I reckon the characters wouldn't use if this book were a Hallmark holiday movie. Nevertheless, I liked the friends and family aspects of the story, especially where Ivy and one of her elderly neighbors are concerned. Granted, part of the family mystery seems farfetched, given that it's the internet age where it's pretty easy to find out certain stuff rather than being in the dark for years. But I enjoyed that warm and comforting side of the story anyway. I would have read this book just for that. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
"From May Kay Andrews, the New York Times bestselling author of Hello, Summer, comes a novella celebrating the magic of Christmas and second chances in The Santa Suit. When newly-divorced Ivy Perkins buys an old farmhouse sight unseen, she is definitely looking for a change in her life. The Four Roses, as the farmhouse is called, is a labor of love-but Ivy didn't bargain on just how much labor. The previous family left so much furniture and so much junk, that it's a full-time job sorting through all of it. At the top of a closet, Ivy finds an old Santa suit-beautifully made and decades old. In the pocket of a suit she finds a note written in a childish hand: it's from a little girl who has one Christmas wish, and that is for her father to return home from the war. This discovery sets Ivy off on a mission. Who wrote the note? Did the man ever come home? What mysteries did the Rose family hold? Ivy's quest brings her into the community, at a time when all she wanted to do was be left alone and nurse her wounds. But the magic of Christmas makes miracles happen, and Ivy just might find more than she ever thought possible: a welcoming town, a family reunited, a mystery solved, and a second chance at love"-- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
