When Grace moves to Hong Kong after her father’s death with her mom and new stepdad, she is concerned about fitting in at her fancy new school. But when a mysterious old woman gifts her a dragon egg during a field trip, Grace discovers that the wonderful stories of dragons her father told her when she was a young girl might be real - especially when the egg hatches.
When bad guys show up, she and her friends race against time to get help. Someone wants the dragon for their own purposes, but our Grace isn't going to let that go down.

Initial reactions/impressions of the novel:
• Artwork is expressive and colorful
• Not sure about having the main character smack someone with a skateboard – even a bully…
• Chinese mythology is very cool ( )

This was such a good graphic novel. I really quick read. I really liked how this story was not only set hon long and dealt with harder issues like grief, friendship and adjusting to a new life. I also loved the focus on chinese mythology. I also really liked how this story progressed liked that it was action adventure with a a heavy focus on myths and dragons. It was really compeling story, with a realy nice art style!! I will def be checking out book 2! ( )

Grace moves to Hong Kong with her mom and stepdad who works for a medical research company. In the market, a lady with blue eyes gives Grace a dragon egg. It soon hatches into a dragon! This pulls Grace and her new group of friends into a quest and adventure. Soon the chase is on from people who want to steal the dragon and use it's powers. Grace and her friends have to outwit and figure out mythology to survive and save the dragon. This graphic was difficult for me to read in some parts due to shiny pages and tiny font, but that is probably more a function of my eyes rather than book design. ( )

Representation: Asian main character
Trigger warnings: Racism, bullying, death of a father
Score: Seven points out of ten.

Update: This actually was a good fantasy novel. The beginning was disjointed, it was a scene about some racist bullies, then suddenly the main character's dad dies, and the book just cuts to a scene where she moves to Hong Kong, but the book gets a lot better from there. The main character, Grace, discovers a dragon, and then a whole lot of backstory is explained about the war of the humans and the dragons and the treaty about human and dragon blood never mixing afterwards, which I liked.

The villains were very interesting, the first villain who lived in some sort of parallel world, was just pure evil, but the second villain was just misguided, he just wanted to make lives better by mixing human and dragon blood, which unknowingly broke the treaty and almost destroyed the whole city in the process. The story just ends when everything is back to normal, and after that, a cliffhanger, I can't wait to read the second book in the series, hopefully it answers some questions I had in the story, such as more information about the dragons and that one water spirit character. If you like a fantasy novel, this is the book for you. ( )
