History. Nonfiction. HTML:

A powerful chronicle of the women who used their sewing skills to survive the Holocaust, stitching beautiful clothes at an extraordinary fashion workshop created within one of the most notorious WWII death camps.
At the height of the Holocaust twenty-five young inmates of the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration campâ??mainly Jewish women and girlsâ??were selected to design, cut, and sew beautiful fashions for elite Nazi women in a dedicated salon. It was work that they hoped would spare them from the gas chambers.

This fashion workshopâ??called the Upper Tailoring Studioâ??was established by Hedwig Höss, the camp commandant's wife, and patronized by the wives of SS guards and officers. Here, the dressmakers produced high-quality garments for SS social functions in Auschwitz, and for ladies from Nazi Berlin's upper crust.

Drawing on diverse sourcesâ??including interviews with the last surviving seamstressâ??The Dressmakers of Auschwitz follows the fates of these brave women. Their bonds of family and friendship not only helped them endure persecution, but also to play their part in camp resistance. Weaving the dressmakers' remarkable experiences within the context of Nazi policies for plunder and exploitation, historian Lucy Adlington exposes the greed, cruelty, and hypocrisy of the Third Reich and offers a fresh look at a little-known chapter of World War II and… (mehr)

Las modistas de Auschwitz
Lucy Adlington

This is probably more of a 3.5 rating to me (rating shown may differ depending on review site) but on those sites where I haven't figured out how to do half stars (if they're even available on that site), I decided a 4 was more appropriate than a 3 because I do believe that stories like this need to be told. It's all too easy to forget the atrocities, particularly as the survivors age and pass away, silencing their voices.

The author becomes intrigued by mention of a fashion salon in Auschwitz, established by the wife of the camp commandant. Eventually she ends up connecting with the last surviving seamstress who worked there.

The atrocities suffered are horrible. I was amazed at how some of the women could keep such positive attitudes in such circumstances. Actually, at times I'm amazed anyone survived at all!

These women used their sewing skills to stay alive. Despite their own discomforts, they often shared any extras they received among themselves and with other friends in the concentration camp. ( )

This recounting of lives of many seamstresses who survived the Holocaust should be read by anyone interested in this horrific event. The book starts our a bit wobbly while the author tries to establish the threads about the disparate pre-war lives of these involved women who are from different countries and varying backgrounds, while some are known to one another. The book hits its stride during their time together in Auschwitz. The intermingled stories of these women following the war continues after their abrupt emancipation. While parts of the story are emotionally difficult to read, seeing how the resilience of these special women contributes to their survival is definitely worth it. ( )
