(3.61) | 13 | A Chicago department store is the scene of gruesome crime in this mystery by a New York Times-bestselling Edgar Award winner. Linell Wynn, copywriter for Chicago department store Cunningham's, knows how to put a clever spin on everything. But she's at a loss for words when, after closing time, she finds a corpse in a window display. There he is, as cold and lifeless as a mannequin, his skull pulverized with a golf club: valued store manager Michael 'Monty' Montgomery. And while red might be the color for the new spring season, Linell never expected to see quite so much of it . . . Linell had a history with the too-charming-to-be-believed victim-and being intimately acquainted with his cruel side has made her a suspect in his murder. But as everyone at Cunningham's knows, finding someone who didn't want Monty dead would be tough. When a second murder throws the store detective off track, Linell is plunged into the investigation. Now, she's working after hours to find a killer, and she has more to lose than her job. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Phyllis A. Whitney including rare images from the author's estate.… (mehr) |

Our heroine, Linell Wynn, writes copy for signs used in Cunningham's Department Store in Chicago. She's not looking forward to seeing Michael Montgomery, who is in charge of the window displays at the store, again. She was engaged to Monty until he dumped her to marry the daughter of another department head. Linell isn't in love with Monty now, but she doesn't want her coworkers' pity. Too bad she's the poor soul to find his body.
The more we learn about Monty, the more obvious it becomes that Linell had a narrow escape. Chris, the new widow, is unfortunate enough to still love the husband who made her life miserable. There are other employees of the store who had reason to hate Monty, but the police think Linell had a great motive.
There will be another murder before various secrets are uncovered, secrets so well kept that Linell had no idea her coworkers even had secrets. If Linell isn't careful, she could be the third victim.
The book may have come out during World War II, but there's no real sense that a war was going on. I suppose that's because readers might have wondered why some of the male characters, including the hero, weren't fighting in it.
The details about the workings of window displays in department stores back then were interesting. The song that gets quoted, 'Begin the Beguine' is real. It's by Cole Porter. You may find both instrumental and vocal versions online if you wish to listen to it. ( )
