6/10, I don't know why this got an award, it was forgettable, much like Dork Diaries. ( )

Sad premise - Ana has cancer and is dying and "exit through the gift shop" is her euphemism for "bucket list", things she wants to do before she passes away. As she does her treatment, she loses her hair and her best friend Al is there for her with a collection of multi-coloured wigs to wear to school which he also does. There is also the bully Alyssa who Ana finally gets fed up with and punches in the nose - a lot of "normal" kid stuff to do before the end.
I thought this book would make me cry but it didn't. It's hard to describe. I wonder what the students will think of it? - I think it will raise some issues with them but its done in a sensitive kid-friendly manner so I think that it would be okay for students as young as Grade 5. ( )

"Exit Through the Gift Shop" was a touching story of a young girl's battle with cancer. Although the topic was morbid, the story wasn't. It was sweet, humorous and up-lifting. Ana was sassy and spirited, and had the best friend ever in Al. he was always enthusiastic and supported Ana at all times. I adored him! The use of illustrations, word definitions and checklists enhanced the novel and made it accessible for younger readers. A wonderful read. ( )
