Book club pick :)

I’ve never read anything by Amélie Nothomb, now I think that it would be nice to read more. This book is an homage to and a biography of the author’s father, Patrick Nothomb (partly fictionalized, I’m guessing).

It begins with Patrick facing a firing squad during a hostage crisis and ends with a rescue. In between, there is a life. I liked the writing very much.

“… je vois ma joie insolite d’exister.
Insolite parce que insolente: autour de mois régnait le chagrin. J’avais huit mois quand mon père est mort dans un accident de déminage. Comme quoi, mourir est un tradition familiale. ”

There is a kind of frozen dignity in the prose. Things are described with sympathy, a touch of sarcasm, and a touch of heartbreak. Patrick’s mother cannot love him:
“Ses chaussures à talons faisaient en s’éloignant un bruit superbe qui me rendait malade d’amour.”

My favourite part was the time Patrick spent with his paternal grandfather the baron and his family. The baron is so charming, so dignified – and terrible, out of touch with reality. The household is ridiculously horrific (horrifically ridiculous?). Yet Patrick experiences that naive and oblivious happiness of childhood, when you adapt to strange situations you don’t completely understand and learn to enjoy them. Perhaps you enjoy them even more if you are not loved enough.

I was slightly less interested in Patrick the adolescent, checking how much time I had left in every chapter. The story of how he met his future wife was entertaining, though. And the last chapter was riveting. ( )

En la primera página de este libro encontramos a un hombre frente a un pelotón de fusilamiento. Estamos en el Congo, en 1964. Ese hombre, secuestrado por los rebeldes junto con otros mil quinientos occidentales, es el joven cónsul belga en Stanleyville. Se llama Patrick Nothomb y es el futuro padre de la escritora.

Partiendo de esta situación extrema, Amélie Nothomb reconstruye la vida de su padre antes de ese momento. Y lo hace dándole voz. De modo que es el propio Patrick quien narra en primera persona sus peripecias. Y así sabremos de su padre militar, muerto en unas maniobras por la explosión de una mina cuando él era muy pequeño; de su madre desapegada, que lo mandó a vivir con los abuelos; del abuelo poeta y tirano, que vivía ajeno al mundo; de la familia aristocrática, decadente y arruinada, que tenía un castillo; del hambre y las penurias durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Sabremos también de sus lecturas de Rimbaud; de las cartas de amor que escribía para un amigo y que en nombre de la amada respondía
la hermana de esta; de los dos verdaderos escritores de las cartas, que acabaron enamorándose y casándose; de su aprensión a la sangre, que podía provocar que se desmayase si veía una gota; de su carrera diplomática… Hasta llegar de nuevo a esos momentos terribles del inicio, en que apartaba la vista para no ver sangre derramada de otros rehenes pero tuvo que mirar a la muerte a los ojos.

En Primera sangre, su novela número treinta, galardonada con el Premio Renaudot en 2021, Amélie Nothomb rinde tributo a su padre, que acababa de fallecer cuando la autora emprendió la escritura de esta obra. Y así reconstruye el origen, la historia de su familia antes de que ella naciera. El resultado es un libro vivaz, intenso, trepidante; dramático a ratos, y muy divertido en otros momentos. Como la vida misma.

Ze kan en wil het echt niet, Amélie Nothomb, een verhaal langer dan 200 bladzijden schrijven. Dit is er amper 170, en dan nog groot gedrukt, en het breekt gewoon af waar het interessant lijkt te worden. Het onderwerp is bekend: het is eigenlijk de wat geromanceerde biografie van Amélie’s vader, Patrick Nothomb, een Belgisch diplomaat. Ik heb hem zelf nog oppervlakkig gekend toen hij ambassadeur was in Rome en hij maandelijks in zijn residentie voor de landgenoten in de Italiaanse hoofdstad een klein concert organiseerde. Leuke avonden altijd, waarbij het vooral zaak was de unieke kans te krijgen toegelaten worden tot het dakterras dat een uniek uitzicht had op het Forum Romanum. Patrick Nothomb overleed in maart 2020, en dit boek is blijkbaar een eerbetoon van Amélie aan haar vader. In essentie beschrijft ze in deze roman zijn moeilijke jeugd en vroegste diplomatenjaren, door hemzelf verteld. Het is aardig, dat zeker, en op het einde ook interessant omdat vader Nothomb blijkbaar een rolletje heeft gespeeld in de moeilijke jaren na de onafhankelijkheid van de Belgische Congo-kolonie. Maar, zoals gezegd, daar breekt het verhaal plots af. Uiteraard is het wel degelijk een mooi eerbetoon van een dankbare dochter, maar als lezer blijf je echt wel op je honger. ( )

Les biographies de Nothomb sont exceptionnelles. Celle-ci n'est pas vraiment une autobiographie puisque c'est la vie de son père qu'elle raconte, mais à la première personne du singulier. Elle a toujours la plume pleine de verve, ce regard décalé et des descriptions à la fois dépouillées et précises.
Cette histoire est un régal qui se lit en quelques heures et qui est un véritable hommage à son père. ( )
