I received this book as part of the Early Reviewers Program and let it sit for a long time. When I finally got to it I found it was a great read and very exciting. I'm still wondering as to the motivation of the characters and the "spy". It certainly makes the British Embassy seem like a very insecure place at the end of WWII. The story of how the book was discovered, edited, and published by the main author's niece was almost as interesting as the story. It took me a few minutes to realize that the introduction was not part of the novel. This book is well worth the reader's time! ( )Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. Requiem for a Spy by Richard Miles and Jill Rose was an interesting story set in the 40's and 50's. The story revolves around a British naval officer assigned to the British Embassy in Washington D.C. during WWII and the period after the war. The story involves the Russian attempts to gather information on the atomic bomb and the various Russian spies that existed in the British Intelligence Services at that time. A cold war novel, albeit at the very beginning of the cold war (end of WWII and next 1-2 years) with a triangle of intrigue centered on atomic weapons. Reminds me a bit of some Len Deighton cold war novels , but instead of UK missions vs East Germany, the setting for most of this novel is in the USA. it is a fairly quick read, flows very well. i question the use of the term CIA (might be referenced before its 1947 stand-up), but all else is very believable. The author could have ended the novel with thoughts for a follow-on, however, since this was based in part on real life experiences - the novel concludes without a logical sequel. How this novel came about is a great story in itself and the introduction well worth reading. Nicely detailed and paced quick enough to keep you reading late into the night. No heroes, no villains, or all heroes, all villains. Don't miss this one.I received this eBook as part of the Early Reviewers program. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. Disclaimer: I received a copy of this as an Early Reviewer. No compensation was received other than the chance to read this work. This book, based loosely on the original author's experience with one of the Cambridge Five (UK spies that sided with the USSR during the Cold War), is about the spy mission the story's lead, Tom Davis, participates in and the fallout that results from it. The story is engaging, and the characters are fairly well-fleshed out. The pace of the book overall is consistent. This book doesn't go in for the more James Bond sort of vibe, it's a bit more Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy or the Talented Mr. Ripley in feel. Recommended for those interested in stories based during the Cold War, those who enjoy cloak-and-dagger maneuvering, and those who enjoy trying to puzzle out who is on whose side during a story. A posthumous roman à clef set at the dawn of the Cold War, inspired by author Richard Miles’ contemporaneous experiences and his personal acquaintance with notorious Soviet spy Donald Maclean. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
