People often ask, "How do you create such wonderful characters?" My answer usually confuses people, as I will tell them, "I don't. The characters come to me and tell me their stories." If I simply close my eyes and clear my mind, there will always be at least one character that will appear in my imagination (usually it's two or three). And once a character has appeared in my mind, all I need to do is give this individual a little attention and he or she will start revealing every aspect of their life to me. The more I focus on them, the more details I get. It's always been that way. I've been able to generate highly detailed characters in practically any genre since I was a kid. I never thought much of this ability as I always assumed everyone's imagination worked that way. I think it's important to note that I don't have any control over the characters in my books. I don't "craft" them in any specific way, nor can I force them to be something they are not. I just watch and listen, and they reveal their life history to me. Then I write about them. The characters in 13 Character Backstories were generated in the above described manner. I listened to them while they shared their life story with me, and then I wrote about them. These characters are incredibly unique. All of them have their quirks, strengths and weaknesses. And if you let them, I'm sure they will come alive in your imagination, and maybe you'll learn a thing or two about them that I don't even know. This book contains detailed backstories for thirteen characters for use in Fantasy Roleplaying Gameplay. Use them as colorful NPCs or adopt one as your main character. Please read the sample portion of this book to get a feel for what's included. This book is approx. 25,000 words in length.… (mehr)

13 Character Backstories: Glendor's RPG Adventures
By Christian Blake

I've been interested and intrigued by author's and other development on how they come up with characters since I could read.
Very interesting book on how the author came up with the 13 in this book.
I received my copy in exchange for my honest review on Librarything.

I have to start by saying that I was disappointed. When I received this book, I hoped for some NPC inspiration. However, what I have taken from this, is what I should avoid for my campaign. The largest issue I see here is the sexism. To anyone who may feel the need to argue against this, I would invite you to re-read Roxxy's section. Women do not instantly hate any attractive women that they see. Women do not suddenly become unattractive and undesirable at the age of thirty. There are numerous sections of this book that would be at home on the r/menwritingwomen subreddit. The other glaring issue is that there was little here that was original. Most of the characters rely heavily on well established tropes. Tropes can be fun if you give them a new twist, but you won't find that here. It's a shame because I could see some potential here. The interweaving of the characters was a nice touch and a few of the character quirks were clever and subverted expectations. Those moments though, are far too few to be satisfying. ( )

Very creative.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but I liked the in-depth character details and how they are all connected. For use in fantasy role-playing games. But even if you’re not using them for roll playing it was a good read.

It gave better character backstories than some of the books I’ve read.

After the video game, "Life is Strange: True Colors" has been released, I have been interested in RPG. I have learned more about it and it sounds very fun! I read through all the characters and they are so creative! I love their backstories! This book was very nicely written and easy to follow! Love it! :) ( )

I won this book in the LibraryThing member giveaway in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a really cool and interesting idea for a book. This book is literally descriptions of 13 characters that Christian has created that you can use in a fantasy role-playing game play. I really like the idea of that. His characters are interesting and very descriptive.

If there was a book for characters to possibly write in a story, I'd be down for that, too, for sure! ( )
