Spänningen finns, men dynamiken mellan karaktärerna har en tendens att falla platt. På grund av Elisas tidigare trauma så ses hon vanligtvis som instabil och otrovärdig, varav hennes egen man hellre tar sin broders parti varje gång. Med andra ord är hennes man inte direkt en bra make, vilket förmodligen är fallet på grund av att misstankar skall föras mot honom samt att få huvudpersonen att ifrågasätta sina tankar och funderingar kring sin svåger. Elisas egen självbild och synen som hon har på de i hennes omgivning förstärker inte läsarens sympati för henne utan skapar det motsatta.
