A gripping adventure story set during the Thirty Years War in 17thC Europe. Jean Fiskardo vows to avenge his father’s death and his journey takes him from France to Amsterdam and then on to the battlefields of Germany. I thought this was a fabulous read. It’s a real rollercoaster of a ride. It’s fast paced and beautifully written with some wonderful and vibrant characters. I especially liked Jack/Jag/Jacques. Historical fact is combined with fiction to create a fantastic and extraordinary story. The descriptions are very vivid and the attention to detail is impressive. I could picture it easily in my mind, it has a very good sense of time and place. It’s very much a page turner, action packed. I was gripped from beginning to end and I can’t recommend it enough! I believe The Silver Wolf is the first in a planned trilogy so I’m looking forward very much to book two. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Jack Fiscardo next! The Silver Wolf is one of the best works of Historical fiction that I have read for a long time. To begin with I was not sure that I would like it because it is set in the time of the Thirty Year War, and I thought the story would be all about soldiers and fighting. However it was nothing at all like I imagined it to be. Most of the story is about a young boy named Jack who is the main character in the story. When we first meet Jack , he is nearly at death`s door and he has been rescued by a stranger. He is then taken to the home of a local businessman and looked after by the servant of the house. It is there that the servant notices that Jack is wearing a silver wolf badge. These badges were never given out to boys like Jack only to very experienced soldiers. It has also been said that these badges had supernatural connections too. So how did a boy like Jack even get hold of one of these? Zeige 3 von 3 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

This is a terrific book which uses as its background the Thirty Years War. The research is immense, from the death of Colini to the battles to the life of the Jews of Golden Age Amsterdam it really feels immersive. OK so the characterisation is lacking a little at times but the action is gripping and the story incredibly engaging. I can't wait for the next episode. ( )
