This gained the 4 star rating because it kept me turning the pages past my bedtime. I also really liked the ‘heroes’ of this novel and the narrative played out in my mind like I was bingeing a Shetland/ Rebus TV crime series (complete with wonderful Scottish accents).
This is the first in a series featuring DS Max Craigie. ( )

A terminal old top level criminal is searching his family history. He is murdered by an equally old demented man that renews 200 year old family war. The 3 criminal sons want revenge and surprisingly want the police to investigate.
Good plot and execution of the novel. ( )

Max Craigie has recently arrived in Scotland from London after the shooting of a suspect. He is teamed up with Janie Calder, unpopular because she has been accelerated through the force and is thought to be a bit "odd". Initially they are trying to track down the elderly head of a crime family who has gone missing and they eventually discover his body in a grave in a remote northern cemetery.

They actually have no difficulty in discovering who murdered the old man, but the reason he gives seems a bit fanciful. It seems there is a blood feud going back two centuries. The old man's son has succeeded his father as the head of the family, and is most unwilling to let matters rest.

The blurbs on this book from well known crime writers praise this as a novel that tells us how police departments work. It is certainly thorough and detailed. Max Craigie comes over as a bit of a rogue cop, but, in his own words, he has come into the police force to wear a "white" hat and he wants to stamp out corruption wherever it exists, And it seems there is plenty to be found in the Scottish Police Service.

There is another book in the series, THE BLOOD TIDE, which I will try. ( )

3.5 rounded up to 4

This is a great police procedural thriller that sees DS Max Craigie at war with a well known local crime family. After being relatively new to this genre and having read a lot of police procedurals lately I am starting to notice what works and doesn't work for me. I prefer when the main characters have a bit of depth and potential for development or growth, as opposed to the cookie cutter donut eating police detective who behaves the same way but has a new bad person to put behind bars each book. I also like the actual police type investigation stuff to happen on-page such as crime scene descriptions and investigations etc. Actual detective work where the Reader gets to see the clues/evidence unfold and not just be told about it after the fact. This book hits both of these preferences. However, where it falls a little bit short (but does not affect my overall enjoyment) is on the character development of the criminals. It was like Laurel and Hardy were the heads of the crime family. While reading this I was reminded of an American police story that made it to NZ newspaper reports about 20 years ago. The US police were casually pursuing a criminal on the run in a stolen vehicle. They were fairly casual in their pursuit because the buffoon was indicating 3 seconds in advance before changing lanes or making turns thereby making him easy to follow. I prefer intelligent, polished, charismatic, calculating criminals with vicious under tones. Not the obvious big beefcake bruiser types. I still really enjoyed this and will continue on with the series. I am thoroughly enjoying getting to read beyond YA fiction but also think a lot of these crime novels would be enjoyed by senior high school students too, but they need to read the content warnings.

This was a good start to a series that would likely appeal to fans of Line of Duty, in that it involves rooting out bent coppers. The first chapter starts things off well, and the central characters of Max and Janie are well defined. I also liked Max’s dog, Nutmeg, and his aunt Elspeth. The chapters are short and certainly keep you turning the pages. I was mildly disappointed that one of the murders was committed by someone experiencing paranoid schizophrenia (and who was conveniently off medication when the killing happened), because murderers with mental illness is such an overused trope in crime fiction and perpetuates stigma. Would I read the next book in the series? Perhaps. ( )

Buchbeschreibung
Manche Dinge blieben besser begraben...
