Fiction. Literature. Mystery. After a confession of murder, a sleuthing English teacher will need a Christmas miracle to prove a condemned man innocent. Colorful Christmas lights dapple the family homes in the idyllic lakeside town of Sweet Haven when Jennifer Dean, a young librarian at the local elementary school, is brutally murdered. There are witnesses and her boyfriend Travis Blake confesses to the crime . . . but something doesn't quite add up. Blake is a third generation Army Ranger, awarded the Silver Star for his heroism in Afghanistan-how could a beloved son of this tight-knit burgh commit such a grisly deed? As a community of military families a few miles down the road from an Army base, no one in Sweet Haven wants to investigate a war hero like Blake, not even the top brass at the police department. In steps Cameron Winter, a rugged and lonesome English professor haunted by the ghosts of his own Christmas past, whose former lover asks him to prove Blake innocent. The Sweet Haven murder reverberates in his mind, echoing a horrific yuletide memory from his youth, and Winter knows there are darker powers at play here than a simple domestic dispute. If he can solve this small-town mystery, just maybe he can find peace from his inner demons as well.… (mehr)

Imaginative and engrossing thriller with twists enough to make a carnival ride. Narrator is excellent and his steady pace helped keep track of which twist I was on. Clean. Respectful of religious morality without being preachy. A read-again type of book (some get better with that…). ( )

Writing: 4.5; Theme: 4.0; Content: 4.5; Language: 4.5, Overall: 4.0

This was the first book I've read from this author. I was looking for a new Christmas-related book to read this holiday season and came across this one. The writing was creative and colorful, but I just couldn't really get into the plot of the story. I finished it but decided to depart with it.

A young lady (Jennifer Dean) and librarian within the small community of Sweet Haven, with a questionable past, marries Travis Blake, a former military man. They seemed to have a good marriage until Blake is accused and confesses to murdering his young wife. The reader must discover who is guilty and what's behind the unraveling mystery.

A cousin recommended When Christmas Comes by Andrew Klaven and I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. The story centers on a town populated by retired Army Rangers and their mentality. A handsome college, Cameron Winter, has been asked to prove that Travis Blake is innocent in the brutal murder of a elementary school librarian, Jennifer Dean. The best section of the book rests in the conversation that Cameron has with Margaret Whitaker, a psychotherapist. The reader learns about Cameron’s life: his joys, his regrets, and his longings. Does this cloud the story of Jennifer and Travis? No---this colors the decisions that Cameron makes in regard to Travis and Jennifer. ( )

I was looking for a Christmas themed mystery and I came across this book, my son is in the Army so I was intrigued about that aspect of the book. I had never read or even heard of the author. After reading a bit, and finding the book so poorly written I looked the author up and was shocked to see how many books he has written and well liked they are. I guess I am an outlier, but I thought the writing was simplistic and some of the storylines just plain silly. So many cliches and stereotypes - at times I laughed out loud. I won't be picking up another book by Klavan. ( )
