Carlota Moreau: A young woman, growing up in a distant and luxuriant estate, safe from the conflict and strife of the Yucatan peninsula, the only daughter of a genius - or a madman.Montgomery Laughton: A melancholic overseer with a tragic past and a propensity for alcohol, an outcast who assists Dr Moreau with his scientific experiments, which are financed by the Lizaldes, owners of magnificent haciendas with plentiful coffers. The hybrids: The fruits of the Doctor's labour, destined to blindly obey their creator while they remain in the shadows, are a motley group of part-human, part-animal monstrosities. The plot itself is very original and intriguing. I liked that at the end of the book, the author shortly outlined the political situation in Mexico at that time and explained that this book is loosely based on Wells' "The Island of Dr. Moreau". But in spite of the interesting plot, I felt that something was missing. The characters and their relationships could have been more developed. I felt like I was only on the surface without being able to completely understand their feelings or reasons for their behaviours and actions, and therefore, I really couldn't care less. I hoped for some more drama and feelings.

The Maya vocabulary . . . employs the word "peten" promiscuously for both island and peninsula. The cartographer nearest to the epoch of the conquest are therefore fairly excused for having represented Yucatán as an island torn off from the Mexican main. -- The Magazine of American History with Notes and Queries, 1879

All in all, it was okay. ( )
