It's an emotionally exhausting event to contemplate. But this book, involving a much lesser known perspective, and following a Titanic survivor who has no lost loved ones to lament, struck a balance of being sobering but still bearable to read. The characters in this novel are all based on their real-life counterparts. The characterizations aren't particularly memorable, but I can see how difficult it would be to make this story character-driven, when in reality it is 100% event-driven. It held my interest the entire way through. Thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the digital review copy! This book is on sale as of today. I'm not sure I have seen anything else from this point of view. Well written, I could not put this book down. Highly recommended! ( ) JanaRose1 | Jun 20, 2022 | What starts out as a maiden voyage with a new ship going from Ireland to New York City turns out to be a relative nightmare for everyone involved. The ship hits ice and slowly takes on water and sinks fast. April 15, 1912, is the fateful night that will forever be in history as one of the tragedies of maritime history. There were 2228 people on board the Titanic, 337 in first class, 285-second class, 721 in third class, and 885 crew members, and only 705 survived. Molly Brown, wife of a Colorado silver mine entrepreneur, and John Jacob Astor were among the famous survivors. I found this novel based on facts, very enlightening and sad. All of the lives lost to the frigid waters, impeccable research went into the writing of the book. I found it interesting that the author described what happened to some survivors and the crew of the Carpathia. I read this book in a few sittings and was totally engrossed in the lives and deaths of the people involved. A definite page-turner. I give the book 5 stars for the impeccable research and writing. This is actually a story of survival, the author has us embark on the ship that is full of opulence and splendor. We meet some of the passengers, mostly those in third class, and put faces and names on them.
Sadly, we become informed of the ships that were in the area, and could have come to the rescue, but we are with the one that did the Carpathia. Will we ever know why those other ships never helped?
We meet Arthur Rostron, a real hero, he was the Captain of the rescue ship, we see through the eyes of the author, his compassion, and how he strategizes even the docking of his ship in NY to try and comfort and protect the passengers from the Titanic.
I loved the Afterword, and the Author's notes, she even included actual pictures of the Captain and Kate Connolly.
I received this book through the Publisher Shadow Mountain, and was not required to give a positive review. (
