Emily goes to a farm in New Hapmshire to recover following an illness and learns homespun lessons from Becky. It's more deftly handled than I expected, though full of 'learn the charms of hard work' and 'the pure heart of someone who is poor'. However, the ending was clearly of another era and creeped me out a bit; Becky's parting gift includes a braid of her hair. Euew. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"Mountain-Laurel and Maidenhair" is a 1887 children's novel by American author Louisa May Alcott. A charming tale of innocence and friendship set in idyllic countryside, this inspiring book is perfect for children or teenagers and is not to be missed by fans and collectors of Alcott's wonderful work. Louisa May Alcott (1832 - 1888) was an American short story writer, novelist, and poet most famous for writing the novel "Little Women", as well as its sequels "Little Men" and "Jo's Boys". She grew up in New England and became associated with numerous notable intellectuals of her time, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Henry David Thoreau. Other notable works by this author include: "An Old-Fashioned Girl" (1886), "Eight Cousins" (1869), and "A Long Fatal Love Chase" (1875). Emily is too fragile to do much of anything. Because of this unwanted physical idleness, her mental attitude is somewhat idle too.
Becky is the epitome of a dutiful nineteenth-century maiden, working in the kitchen, doing housework, etc., and she neither complains nor tires of it. These two opposite-natured women become friends.
In short, this is a tale of helping others and being dutiful. Although the message is a positive one, I found the story rather bland on the most part, though it has some good moments here and there. ( )
