"Born with no air in his lungs, it was only when Reuben Land's father, Jeremiah, picked him up and commanded him to breathe that Reuben's lungs filled. Reuben struggles with debilitating asthma from then on, making him a boy who knows firsthand that life is a gift, and also one who suspects that his father is touched by God and can overturn the laws of nature. The quiet 1960's midwestern life of the Lands is upended when Reuben's brother Davy kills two marauders who have come to harm the family. The morning of his sentencing, Davy -- a hero to some, a cold-blooded murderer to others -- escapes from his cell, and the Lands set out in search of him. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and they cover territory far more extraordinary than even the Badlands where they search for Davy from their Airstream trailer"--Container.… (mehr)

Most characters were completely believable. I struggled a bit with Swede.
The author has a command of language that I can only dream about.
At times, the story seemed to move a little slow, but the magical language usually made that acceptable. Every now and again we seemed to drift off in no man's land, and I'm still wondering what the point of these little sequences might be. I did find them distracting and ultimately left me a bit unsatisfied not knowing how or why I needed to meet these people and what happened to some of these minor characters that we spent a bit of time with along this journey. Read for Book Club - I liked it way more than my other two book club members. Jeremiah Lamb - like an Old Testament prophet meek as Abraham, what a creat character. We discussed the ending and they were disappointed some how, but I liked it. ( )

What a gorgeous book. I found myself rationing chapters to make it last longer and thinking about the really difficult situations and personal struggles this book brings up. I'm not a religious person, but this book almost could make me find religion. I highly recommend giving it a try. ( )

To Robin
The country ahead is as wild a spread
As ever we're likely to see

The horses are dancing to start the advance--
Won't you ride on with me?
Erste Worte
Seit meinem ersten kläglichen Atemzug habe ich mir nichts so sehr gewünscht wie eine kräftige Lunge und genug Luft zum Atmen.

So thoughtlessly we sling on our destinies.
Thinking of supper, I asked, “You want us to do anything, Dad?”
“Persevere,” he said.
I’m sorry if you thought better of me, but the fact is I spent whole hours imagining alarming humiliations for those kids - big dumb kids, always with effortless all-star lungs. … It’s true. No grudge ever had a better nurse.
I couldn’t put words to it, but Swede, as usual, could.
This still happens with Swede and me. I’ll lack a word, and she’ll dump out a bushel of them.
“My sympathies,” Dad said. “Appreciated but gratuitous,” the woman replied – and Swede would have loved her forever for that phrase alone –
