Fantasy. Fiction. Mythology. Historical Fiction. HTML:"A delicate weaving of myth and history, The Witch and the Tsar breathes new life into stories you think you know."â??Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of For the Wolf

In this stunning debut novel, the maligned and immortal witch of legend known as Baba Yaga will risk all to save her country and her people from Tsar Ivan the Terribleâ??and the dangerous gods who seek to drive the twisted hearts of men.

As a half-goddess possessing magic, Yaga is used to living on her own, her prior entanglements with mortals having led to heartbreak. She mostly keeps to her hut in the woods, where those in need of healing seek her out, even as they spread rumors about her supposed cruelty and wicked spells. But when her old friend Anastasiaâ??now the wife of the tsar, and suffering from a mysterious illnessâ??arrives in her forest desperate for her protection, Yaga realizes the fate of all of Russia is tied to Anastasiaâ??s. Yaga must step out of the shadows to protect the land she loves.

As she travels to Moscow, Yaga witnesses a sixteenth century Russia on the brink of chaos. Tsar Ivanâ??soon to become Ivan the Terribleâ??grows more volatile and tyrannical by the day, and Yaga believes the tsaritsa is being poisoned by an unknown enemy. But what Yaga cannot know is that Ivan is being manipulated by powers far older and more fearsome than anyone can imagine.

Olesya Salnikova Gilmore weaves a rich tapestry of mythology and Russian history, reclaiming and reinventing the infamous Baba Yaga, and bringing to life a vibrant and tumultuous Russia, where old gods and new tyrants vie for power. This fierce and compelling novel draws from the timeless lore to create a heroine for the modern day, fighting to save her country and those she loves from oppression while also finding her true purpose as a goddess, a witch, and a woman.

The myth / folktale of Baba Yaga is an old Slavic one. The Witch and the Tsar by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore sets this retelling in the era of Ivan the Terrible. The story is entertaining but long. The mix of history and mythology also takes some study to follow with glossaries and list included in the book. For me, the history submerges and becomes part of the mythology, and I enjoy an entertaining book about gods, goddesses, and monsters.

This novel had a great opening - I was immediately intrigued, wanted to know more, and was fascinated by the fusion of history and fiction. However, after the first third of the book, I started to loose interest. I finished the book and overall I liked this re-imagining of the Baba Yaga story, but I felt like the conclusion was abrupt and I was left wanting more. ( )

She took the badass Baba Yaga and turned her into a naive, weak woman-child.

Yaga is an immortal living deep in the forest and tending to those in need. However when her friend the Tsaritsa is being poisoned, Yaga has to travel to Moscow where she meets an old acquaintance. Accused of witchcraft and thrown into prison Yaga is helpless to stop her friend being poisoned. years later Yaga is called on to support those fighting the Tsar as he is possessed by evil. This is a supernatural enemy and Yaga may not be strong enough to survive.
This is a truly magical book weaving together several different strands of Slavic myth with the real life story of Ivan the Terrible. Yaga is made to be both human and yet more, she is not the evil witch of legend. The emotions are strong and the characters well drawn. A really wonderful fantasy. ( )
