This volume brings together the essays of one of the largest scientific conferences ever held on Latin American football and the largest on the European continent, organized by members of the German Association for Research on Latin America (ADLAF) in 2018. Starting from the thesis that there is no such thing as "the" Latin American football, the volume, which had the financial support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, explores, over seven thematic fields, the cultural relevance of this sport in Latin America both in the communal and institutional fields, national and global over time. From different transdisciplinary perspectives, the authors describe (re)constructions of belonging and exclusion in changing formations of community identity based on gender, ethnic or style distinctions. The permanent struggle for political power on and on the field and its main actors, the (accelerated) processes of migration and the role of the media, cinema, literature and visual representations represent the three main axes of analysis on the dynamic relations between football and society in Latin America.
