This was a sweet fantasy romance with an adorable, somewhat nerdy, immortal MMC, and kind of high strung MFC. It leans a little more towards the fantasy side than the romance side, but the romance is still pretty central to the story. I was very involved in the beginning of the story, but I am an impatient reader these days and it did get a little slow for my taste by the middle. And while I loved Adam, Nora was not my favorite heroine, though I can see how her character fits her history. I think if you are happy with a lighter romance, this one might be worth a try. The big bad is intriguing and I think there’s plenty to continue the series with. But happily, there is no cliffhanger. I’m not sure if I will read the next book in the series, but I will consider it when I see the blurb. I liked Nora, the main character, and enjoyed her journey throughout the story. The world building was well done and the characters were well drawn and developed. The author leaned heavily on flashbacks to flesh out the fantasy elements as well as the main romance, and this could have been handled a bit more seamlessly. I would definitely look for the next book to see where the story goes. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. This book follows the story of Nora, an historian working in a museum in Chicago, who studies ancient civilizations and weaponry in particular. Nora’s life is turned upside down when two ancient weapons arrive in the museum. Due to an inscription in an unknown language, Nora agrees to work with Adam, a language specialist professor who is a bit more than it seems. What I enjoyed: - Xander’s flashbacks were my favorite part of the book. I enjoyed learning about the civilization through his eyes and I think these chapters gave a good support to the present storyline. - I liked the medical details and how they were included in the story alongside the magic. - The diversity and representation of the characters. S C Grayson wrote several interesting characters that I want to know more about. - The concept of the story is interesting and I am curious about how it will develop in the next books. - There is no cliffhanger which is something that my heart appreciates most of all What I think it could have been done better: - The romance appears rushed and a bit abrupt. Although we are introduced to the MC (Adam) in the beginning of the book, very little happens between them. We see little interaction between Nora and Adam, with very few dialogues and almost no tension between them. We are told, rather than see, that they feel attracted to each other and it didn’t work for me. I understand this choice as I was expecting this particular twist but it still compromised my satisfaction with the result. - I feel some parts of the story could have been more developed. Being an historian, I was expecting Nora to be more curious about Eteria. It would have been a brilliant way to develop the world building, to learn about the magic and to see more of the supporting characters. - I think some events that occurred didn’t add much value to the story and could have been worked in a different way (e.g conference/ plane) Overall I enjoyed this reading and I congratulate the author for this debut. Thank you City Owl Press, LibraryThing and S C Grayson for the early access to this book for an honest review. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. This book was an enjoyable read, with likeable characters. The story was a bit familiar, with the unexpected discovery of weapons with magical properties leading to a secret society of sorts and an epic battle. Depending on the plot of any following books in this series, I may read them. There was enough differences in this book to make it interesting with some unpredictable parts. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Historian Nora Zvezda is gunning for a promotion at the Chicago Field Museum. The discovery of two ancient Greek weapons unlike any she's seen before might be her big break-but the artifacts are more than they seem. Trying to uncover their secrets, Nora enlists the help of professor of ancient languages, Dr. Adam Scott, an undeniably handsome man of intrigue. Nora has been too busy to worry about romance, but Adam seems to be overflowing with charm-and secrets, the biggest being his rank among the Eteria, a secret society of powerful sorcerers who've been in hiding since the days of the Greek empire. When Nora's work with the ancient and mystical weapons draws the attention of the Shadow, a powerful force that feeds off fear and negative emotions, she finds herself thrust in the middle of a perilous, age-old war between good and evil. To protect herself, she must join the Eteria in their fight, all while struggling not to sacrifice the life she's worked so hard for. Complicating things further is her undeniable desire for Adam and the feeling that he may be hiding more than his status as an immortal sorcerer. Contains mature themes.
