Sports writer Brad Herzog pairs easy-to-read rhymes with detailed expository so that readers are pitched baseball's facts, faces, history, and places from A-Z. "H is for Home Run: A Baseball Alphabet" by Brad Herzog and Melanie Rose is a great book about the ins and outs of baseball. This book can be used from about first grade to about fifth grade depending on what the book is being used for. This is a great book for several reasons. One of the reasons this books is beneficial is because it not goes through each letter of the alphabet and includes something about baseball with that letter, it also gives different baseball facts on each page as well. This would be a great book to use when doing any lesson on sports, baseball in particular. Jj - J is for Jackie Robinson, who stood for what was right - to judge on someone's talent, not if they're black or white. Great book about a great game! It's almost like two books - the main entry for the letter (like the one above) and then writing in the side columns about other baseball related items of the same letter! And they are written at two different reading levels! So, it reads one way like a child's first alphabet book, and another way as an informational book for older children looking to learn more about the sport! Very cool illustrations too! This book is a keeper! H is for Homerun is a book that tells the history about baseball using the alphabet. B is for the best, Babe Ruth. THe book then gives a short biography about each person or it gives a history about thinks such as a cleanup hitter batter. I think this book is a great way to teach students their abc's. THe students also get to learn about baseball and some key players. THat is important because baseball is one of America's favorite past times. There is nothing better than sitting in a ball park listening to all the sound plus, eating the good food, and rooting for your favorite team. I will let the students come up with their own meanings for each letter of the alphabet. They will each make a small alphabet book that also includes pictures they draw or cut out from magazines to illistrate each letter. We will then sing our abc song together as a class.
