Starved for the whole truth, man? Take a bite out of this bitsy but beefy package, brimming with morsels of wit, wisdom and worldly knowledge brought to you by the one and only Bartholomew J. Simpson. Get the hard-knocks facts of life from the guy who's seen it all, heard it all, done it all and denies it all. (The "J" stands for "Jo-Jo"...)… (mehr)

I’ve had this book for so long that I can’t actually remember when I got it! The edition is dated 1997 so it was possibly that year or the year after. I was quite a big fan of the Simpsons at the time as they’d not long since hit terrestrial TV in the UK so I’d been aware of the programme for years but never been able to watch it before. I’m not entirely sure why I never read this book when I first got it. I know I flicked through it but that was as far as it went. I think it’s a shame because I would have enjoyed it so much more if I had read it then than I did reading it so many years later!

Although it’s rather old now, it’s not dated too badly. There were three instances that were particularly dated because they mentioned actual years: Bart bribing Lisa - “Hey Lisa, I’ll give you a dollar for that last pork chop,” then whisper under your breath, “in the year 2014.”; an excuse for not fighting bullies, “Sorry, my fight schedule is all booked up until the year 2004.” and the history timeline only goes to 1993. The only other thing that seemed a bit dated was the references to Lisa eating meat so I presume the book was done before she became a vegetarian.

On the whole, it’s not a bad book but I don’t think I found it as amusing or entertaining as I would have done if I’d read it when I first got it. There was one thing that particularly amused me as a graphic designer, under the section on health, it says that skin is normally PMS116 in colour. ( )

I have such fond memories of the Simpson’s, especially Bart. There’s something entertaining in his absolute determination to be anti-everything. He’s rude, disobedient, obnoxious and yet we love him.
I can’t really describe this book. It’s a conglomeration of Bart’s wisdom from sex to religion to cheating in school. Some of the information is based in fact but I wouldn’t use it for a report. Despite it feeling childish, this book is not for children. The language is a little rough and there are some ideas your children just don’t need to have come from someone else (let alone think of on their own).
I thoroughly enjoyed this trip down memory lane. I felt like I was back in high school pouring over Life is Hell in the back of class with my friends. This is one you could probably read over and over because there are so many little parts to each page. I’m glad I picked this up. I needed a little sunshine to carry me on to spring. ( )
