"Obsolescence" is not advertised as part of the Murderbot Diaries but conceivably set in the universe, nevertheless. To fit, events here would have had to take place perhaps centuries before events of the series judging from prevalent technology. Wells employs signature terms for bots & augmented humans, and the story concerns corporate violence against non-human persons. These are all familiar preoccupations for readers of the Diaries. No CamelCase and set on a station near Jupiter, though; and some characters explicitly noted to have spent time on Earth, whereas the Murderbot universe is never linked to our own.

"Obsolescence" includes a particularly salient item: backstory on augmented rovers, which were name-dropped in Exit Strategy as an "early" version of constructs (of which, SecUnits are one manifestation). The story provides particulars on augmented rovers generally, and describes the specific stories of two individual rovers.

Outwardly, the story itself is presented as nothing more than a science fiction contribution to an anthology on health care. The linkages to Murderbot are my own speculation.

I'm enamoured of Wells's Murderbot universe: themes, character interactions, economical world-building -- it's become a comfort read. "Obsolescence" was a rewarding diversion as I await the next Murderbot novella. ( )
