This short but perfectly formed book is a hymn to the species which we treasure, or ought to treasure but are fast disappearing. From stork to swift to narwhal to hedgehog to seahorse ... and fifteen other creatures, Rundall assembles an eclectic mix of fascinating facts to explain why they are special to her, and should be to us. Beautifully produced, and evocatively illustrated by Talya Baldwin. ( ) This was a delightful book. I hadn’t known what to expect, having bought it on a whim when I saw a big pile of copies in my regular bookshop, after having been enthralled by [Super-Infinite], her recent biography of John Donne. It is a compendium of short articles about various wondrous creatures, offering a blend of folklore and little-known biological ephemera about them, and accompanied by some beautiful illustrations. I took it with me on a brief trip and found it immensely enjoyable to dip into, reading a couple of entries at a time Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"A gloriously illustrated and fascinating bestiary of the world's most extraordinary endangered animals - a treasure trove of vanishing wonders."--
"A swift flies two million kilometres in its lifetime. That's far enough to get to the moon and back twice over - and then once more to the moon. A giraffe was once given to the King of France; she marched through the streets, dressed in the finest couture raincoat Paris could produce. A pangolin's tongue is longer than its body. It keeps it neatly furled in a pouch near the hip. A lavishly illustrated collection of the lives of some of the Earth's most astounding animals, The Golden Mole is a chance to be awestruck and lovestruck - to reckon with the beauty of the world, its fragility, and its strangeness."-- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
