A young man journeys through Indonesia as he tries to explain the tragic death of his fellow surfing friend in this fascinating coming-of-age novel. When Goog loses Castro to a massive wave in the Indian Ocean, he begins a physical and emotional adventure to figure out how mysterious postcards from his dead friend continue to appear. With powerful themes of identity, independence, and friendship, this spirited travelogue offers a wild and gritty tale of growing up. A helpful map of Indonesia is included for tracing Goog's journey.

Very intriguing tale about Goog (Greg) travelling to Indonesia after he receives a series of postcards from his dead mate ( he was taken by a shark) Castro. Despite in reality knowing Castro is dead, Goog sets off to discover who is sending these cryptic messages asking him to meet them on waves at various surfing hotspots in the North. On the way, he meets Niagra, an American backpacker following in the footsteps of his favorite uncle, who ran away to Indonesia after being scarred by the Vietnam War. This forces Goog to also analyse his relationship to his own father, who also found life difficult after 'Nam and disappeared. The two travellers meet up with Beck (who Goog falls in love with) and Urs, 2 swedish backpackers who disappear themselves the instant G says the "L" word. On the way they meet all sorts of varied Indonesian people, survive muggings, "bali belly x 100", a boat explosion, and so many other mishaps. I loved Grant's descriptions of night in Indonesia - the sights, the sounds and the smells and I could picture the steamy evenings very clearly in my head having visited Bali many years ago. I also found the clues left to who was leaving the messages for Goog very intriguing although I was a bit confused as to who Jasper was and what his part in it all was because I had pictured him as a young man, not someone the same age as Goog's Dad. (You'll need to read the book to understand that last comment.) This book was much better than Rhino Chasers.
