The "White Company" is a free band of archers led by Sir Nigel Loring and his squire, Alleyne Edrickson, during the 100 Years' War. Edward the Black Prince is attempting to return Peter of Castile to his throne. Alleyne had grown up in a Catholic abbey, but at 20 years old, was ready to meet the world. The same day Alleyne leaves, the Abbot banishes John of Hordle for worldly behavior. The two meet at a nearby inn where another traveler, Sam Aylward has also stopped. Aylward is on a recruiting trip for the White Company, intending to recruit Sir Nigel Loring to take charge of the company. Alleyne, takes a side journey to meet with his estranged brother. There he meets Maude, and helps her leave. Not much later he discovers she is the daughter of Sir Nigel, who asks Alleyne into his service as squire and tutor to Maude.
