Unputdownable! I finished this book in record time for me, because I had to keep reading. The chilling details, the terror and the thrilling drama just kept ramping up and never slowed down once. In many ways this book is our worst nightmares unraveling in front of us and is sometimes nearly unbearable in its all too realistic depictions of true evil; of a sadistic pedophile and the trail of destruction of lives his actions lead to; the ripples that radiate out until the very last page of the book.

Strange Sally Diamond is an amazing character portrayal; nothing short of masterful. She has suffered the most unimaginable trauma and years of isolation. She is mentally unable to socialize or tolerate loud noises and leads a very singular, eccentric and remotely isolated life. When her adopted father dies, this world of her unravels and she must face the actual world for the first time. A macabre misunderstanding at the very start of the book plunges her head first into this world she has never known.

Sally finds out that people rarely say what they mean. Slowly she gains some friends and some shaky trust in a few people. Then pieces of information about her childhood ordeal start to come out and mysterious and terrifying items arrive in the mail. Has the man who destroyed her mother and traumatized her life found her now and is he coming after her? And who exactly should she trust? Slowly Sally makes great progress, learning to socialize and interact; but always underneath is a rage that scares even herself. She knows she must learn to control that rage.

Sally is also unraveling pieces of the puzzle that is her life and it is far from a smooth road she has to travel. This story held me in its spell from beginning to end. Highly recommended! ( )

This book reminded me of "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine".. as a mystery...this is the second book I read by Liz Nugent...I enjoyed both if them. ( )

This is kind of an extended version of [Room]. What would have happened to everyone involved if psychiatrists and pedophiles were given free rein? It's very disturbing, and I couldn't stop reading. I'll probably read it again at some point because I'll recommend it to enough people that I'll want to join them again. ( )

A woman locked up, pedophile, two children, other family and friends make this a good read. ( )

Oh boy, where to begin. If you are not into disturbing content then put this book down and walk away. I know I don't read a lot of mystery anymore, but was curious about this book feeling it could be the next "Crawdads". I think it actually could be, but would be hard to adapt into anything else due to its violent nature and long story. The twists in the story are great and the writing is good. I'm just not sure who to hand it to next to read. ( )

Despite the grim subject matter, Sally is an appealing character - strange, yes, but also engagingly literal. Nugent hits exactly the right tone of empathy and optimism, but she can't fully banish the darkness.

Nugent fashions an unforgettable protagonist in Sally, and never loses sight of her character's fundamental humanity, even as she piles on twists and steers the narrative into exceptional darkness. Inventive, addictive, and bold, this deserves a wide audience.

Nugent writes relatable, imperfect characters, and her portrayal of Sally's neurodivergence allows a look into the struggles of daily life that most take for granted. This well-written, engaging novel isn't for the light of heart, but it will find a home with readers who thrive on intricate plotlines and character development.
