Captain Peter Joseph Kellerman was once a promising career soldier who'd proven his mettle in battle time and again. Now he's fighting a battle with a whiskey bottle. He's also in charge of Fort Benjamin Grierson, located west of hell, deep in Arizona Territory's Mohawk Valley on the arid edge of the Yuma desert. The men under his command aren't fit to wear the uniform. Killers, thieves, and ravagers condemned to death but who've chosen to serve, holding down the hated Fort Misery. Santiago Lozado, the most wanted bandit on both sides of the border, has set his sights on Fort Misery. Title: Fort Misery

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Fort Misery is a western tale of men sent out to serve at a fort that is way out in no man’s land with no civilization near. Captain Kellerman is a man prone to drink, so being sent out to the wasteland was the army’s way of getting rid of a problem. Other men who serve under the captain are men who had two choices: Go to the fort or die. The men under Kellerman have less than stellar character. When Lt. Cranston is sent to the fort by mistake, the officer can’t believe how bad the conditions are or the threat that hangs over the fort.
Comancheros and Apache, who gather under the leadership of Santiago Lozado, plan on taking the fort from its current residents. Santiago wants his revenge on Captain Kellerman and all the food, women, and money he believes is there. The reason Santiago wants it all is so he can set himself up as a don where all his wants are taken care of, and no law resides.
In this new series, there are various characters in the fort who make a rag tag team of deadly combatants. The men there may be men convicted of various crimes, but they have got what it takes to make a stand against the Comancheros and Apache’s! There is a woman at the fort who serves as cook and when needed as medic. She is a little rough around the edges, but the men appreciate her talents.
There is humor in the book and a surprising romance between two unlikely characters, which was a nice touch to the story. I hope there are more stories with these men, especially Captain Kellerman. I also liked Lt. Hall who loves his snuff, his brandy and seems like an officer who knows how to bolster and offer courage when sorely needed. Grab a copy and return the old west and a fort that no man would willing go to!
