A fantastic way to introduce this historical event to children and inspire them to feel empowered. ( )

Just for a penny seem very little at the beginning. Money is the major drive for pretty much everything in life. Everyone has to work to sustain an income to be able to provide a decent living , and even in most cases just a living. However some people in higher places ,who want to get extra money in their bank accounts will do anything to accomplish that goal , even if it means taking from those who have nothing. This book offers a great example of this situation where the greedy news papers owner wants to charge the newsboys extra money so they can have more. This book shows us how powerful the poor, the weak and neglected can be , and how much they can achieve when they unite. unfortunately These issues are still on these days . The poor making less , and the rich keep getting richer. This book can be taught to students in a social study class to show the importance of unity and that we are always strong , but people in higher places ( politicians and corporations) always want us divided. This book was very powerful to me. I thought it was pretty incredible that these kids who were newsies realized they were being cheated by the big newspaper companies. That these kids fought for what was right, that they did this strike for not just themselves but for their families too. Not once did the ever give up on what they believed in! The outcome wasn't bad, it wasn't good. They were able to come to a compromise and have more money in their pockets to take care of their families properly, and that really was all they wanted. ( )

Kid Blink is about a young boy who was a newsboy and went on strike all over a penny. The reason a penny was such a big deal is because they were making a living for their families and he didn't want the owners to take that away from them so they decided to fight. The whole book shows the "newsies" fight and the measures they took to not have people buy from The World or The Journal. At the end of the book, the newsies won their fight. This is a great book because it shows how one boy stood up for what he believed in and got what he wanted. The lesson is, if you want something, go out and fight for it. One person can make a difference. Kid Blink made a huge dent in The World and The Journal and won the fight all because he believed in something. This would be a great book for young children to learn. The illustration were also done very well and it was very enjoyable. ( )

Most history happens to adults, which can make it a hard sell for kids.

This bit of history is different, as it was a strike by kids, back in the Good Ol' Days where children were put to work to support their families. You might be familiar with this strike if you're a fan of the Disney Musical Newsies. At any rate, this is a story sure to fascinate kids, a story of injustice and hardship being perpetuated by grown-ups on children - and the children winning. (Well, compromising.)

Like all of Don Brown's books the text is enlivened with actual quotes from the people engaged in the strike. This is a good addition to any library. ( )
