A Tale of the Fallen Hero. A disgraced swordsman who has been living off his reputation as a former member of a notorious mercenary band leaves town one step ahead of the law. In search of employment, he decides to head for the seaport town of Cray, a former haunt where he hasn't yet disgraced himself, unlike so many others. His past, however, soon catches up with him, and he finds himself thrust into an impossible situation, caught in the midst of a bitter feud between the city's two ruling families and forced to embark on what will surely prove to be a suicide mission.… (mehr)

Thank you to the author and the Early Reviewer program here on LibThing for my copy of the ebook.
This is a well-written fantasy novella with plenty of action. The author's grasp of English is superb, and the plot moves at a good pace. The only thing I didn't like was . . . the main character. He's quite a bad guy and without any redeeming qualities, actually. I'm afraid I need to at least admire the MC—even a flawed one—in order to enjoy a story. I will definitely look for more by Mr. Whates and hope that the next hero makes amends.

I got this book as an early review copy and this is my honest review. I have not ready any books by this author before. If this book is anything to go by his work, then I'll have to run out and get the others. What a fun, action fantasy book this is. I love a good bad guy! Only short stories, but each is a new adventure. If you love action fantasy this is for you. ( )

I read a lot, 55-60 books minimum a year, and roughly 70% of what I read is fantasy.

This is, honestly, one of the best things I have read in years and I am baffled as to how I lucked out in getting a copy of The Double-Edged Sword because I never win anything and reading this book genuinely felt like such a wonderful Win for me.

This is a short book told in a series of short stories (chapters) about our main character who, while not a good person (he proves himself a murderer and a thief very early on), is completely lovable. Ok, maybe not lovable but I found myself rooting for him at every turn. There is plenty of action and adventure to keep even the most distractible person interested and the main character's world weary views on life made me actually laugh out loud.

I hope that this is just the beginning because I would love to read more! ( )

To say that The Double-Edged Sword by Ian Whates was a pleasant surprise would be an understatement. An honest review seems a small price to pay in exchange for the opportunity to read this story. While it's not a long tale, I found it filled to the brim with action, adventure and unexpected turns, told in voice of the main character, a sell sword, who almost felt like a good friend despite only spending half a dozen chapters with him; his candid humor made me chuckle out loud more than once.
I hope Mr. Whates intend to take us to Arden with this enjoyable escapade. ( )

I am embarrassed as a pastor to admit that I like the main character in this story. He is a thief, a liar, and a murderer. He exhibits all the human traits that I often preach against, yet, I am fascinated by him.

The protagonist states that he doesn't trust anyone that has the same motivations and holds the same values as he does. Which gives proof to the old axiom "there is no honor among thieves" (Proverbs 21:10-11). He is quick to dispatch any competitor as well as to take advantage of the naive.

This is an excellent story. It takes one event and follows it through from beginning to end. The author leaves room for later stories to be told as well as room for any prologues to the current tale to come out at a later date.

It is a quick and easy read. It is, as others have noted, a sword-fighting romp. Fun and entertaining. I eagerly await more tales in the series. ( )
