graphic novel (Alex Award winner). ( )

For me graphic novels are much like short stories, but, in which, the descriptive text is visual, not textual. As such, I do not expect "novel" depth. On the other hand, I do expect some resolution. This first in a three-volume series barely introduces the characters and leaves much unexplained and unanswered. My initial intent was to read the entire series as The Complete Essex County. Unfortunately, that "complete" work was not available to me to read and review as a total entity, so I feel obligated to review this first volume on its own. I'm expecting much more from the rest of the series, but I am somewhat disappointed from I have read so far. ( )

Fascinating and charming. I need to read (reading meaning both reading words and pictures) the Essex County volumes before a full review. ( )

A great story about growing up in Canada and using your imagination to overcome fear, depression and loneliness. ( )
