This was an extremely strange book, but I really enjoyed it. I liked how it was a folktale that I hadn't ever heard before. It made me wonder if it maybe came from a different heritage/background/culture than many of the ones we are used to hearing. After reading the inside of the cover, I learned that it's a Russian fairytale. ( )

This was a very interesting book, this book was about a little girl named too nice, and she was told to go into the forest to get frogs but did not know that the frogs belonged to a witch named Baba Yaga. When Baba Yaga sees too nice, she makes too nice do things around her house. Too nice winds up falling asleep, and her doll that she keeps in her pocket finishes these tasks for her. The doll was given to her by her mother before she passed away, so too nice always has the doll with her. After too nice completes the tasks given by Baba Yaga, she gets to go home and the two girls that made her go into the forest horrid, and very horrid, are punished at the end. This is a fairytale, because Baba Yaga’s house is giant chicken legs that move around, the doll comes to life and does things that a normal human would do and there is no such thing as witches. I really did enjoy this book, and have never read a story like this one. ( )

This was a very fascinating book to get my hands on. The story is one that I thought was something similar to that of a Hansel and Gretel but I was wrong. The story is that of a young girl who lives with two other girls who are just awful people. They tell her that they will do things for her if she goes into the forest and gets one of the frogs that belongs to witch of the woods. She goes into the forest and the witch gives her three tasks to do. Each time, the girl falls asleep and secretly and magically the doll does everything for her. After the third task the witch asks the girl a question and with a correct answer gets the frog and heads back home. I am not doing this story justice the way I am describing it but it was a very well done story with some incredible illustrations that made the witch look extremely scary. ( )

A girl has to face the evil baba yaga. She makes her to perform a series of impossible tests. However, with the help of her doll, she finds that these tasks are not so scary after all. ( )

Baba Yaga is a well-known folk tale witch in Ukraine and throughout Eastern Europe. And reading this story, you'll see elements that are present in most every fairy tale and folk tale you've ever read, as well as elements uniquely Baba Yaga's (her house that moves about walking on giant chicken legs).
A haunting tale where the bad kids – Horrid and Very Horrid – get their due at the end.
This story is a combination of Cinderella and the Wizard of Oz, and is beautifully illustrated by Ruth Brown. ( )
