Be grateful; Be smart; Be involved; Be clean; Be true; Be positive; Be humble; Be still; Be prayerful. NOTE: published in 2002, so before all of the baleful affects of 9/11/2001 came to pass, but still (or even more) relevant. Not preachy, but a common-sense description of the attitudes that allow us to "live after the manner of happiness" with anecdotes from his own life (90+years). It is amazing to me what a tremendous difference simple things make.
"A youth boiling with hormones will wonder why he should not give full freedom to his sexual desires; and if he is unchecked by custom, morals, or laws, he may ruin his life before he matures sufficiently to understand that sex is a river of fire that must be banked and cooled by a hundred restraints if it is not to consume in chaos both the individual and the group." (Page 57)
6 Be Positive
"... my wise father would often say, "Cynics do not contribute, skeptics do not create, doubters do not achieve."" (Page 84)
"Cultivate an attitude of optimism." (Page 88)
Potts came across George Washington praying & wrote his wife "I have this day seen what I never expected. The knows that I always thought the sword and the gospel utterly inconsistent; and that no man could be a soldier and a Christian at the same time. But George Washington has this day convinced me of my mistake. (From Mason Locke Weems, Life of WAshington, Armonk, NY: M. E. Sharp, 1986, p 147.)" (Page 111)
