Warrnambool and its curved Lady Bay was, in the 1870s, a busy seaport on Victoria's coastline, but the bay is also one of the most treacherous. Reefs, dangerous currents and unpredictable weather threatened ships and seafarers. It has been the scene of serious shipwrecks, human tragedies, major incidents, rescues and some unexplained events between 1850 and 1929. In the worst wreck, seven sailors drowned in rough seas at the bay entrance. A four-year-old girl was thrown into the waves from a capsizing rescue boat. A steamer hit a submerged object in the dark and attempted to enter Lady Bay, sinking, on the same night a power outage plunged Warrnambool and its harbour into darkness. Then there's the rogue waves that mysteriously rise from a calm sea, the tidal wave that crashed over the dunes and into Lake Pertobe and the series of earthquakes that vibrated the bay and shook bricks and plaster from the Warrnambool buildings. This book presents Lady Bay and all its infamous history.
