The Ice Age National Scenic Trail meanders through some of the most picturesque and memorable sights in the heart of Wisconsin. Following a 1,200 mile route along the southernmost advance of the last continental glacier over 12,0000 years ago, the Ice Age Trail passes by and through many features that show evidence of the sculpting work done by the massive ice sheets so long ago. The trail also goes through a multitude of vibrant communities, rich with history and local traditions. Hikers who walk the entire length of the Trail are affectionately known as "Thousand Milers." Emergency heart surgery forced photographer Cameron Gillie to make significant lifestyle changes. He started to combine exercise and photography, an idea that evolved into the biggest photographic project of his decades-long career: to hike and photograph the Ice Age Trail. After months of planning, Gillie set out in April, 2019 to become a Thousand Miler himself. From port cities on the inland seas, through the tallgrass prairies midstate, to the rocky and remote northwoods, Gillie uncovered hints of the past in ruined and rusted farm implements; he experienced innumerable moments of warmth and hospitality in restaurants, bars, and antique shops along the route; and he observed ways of life that, like the Ice Age Trail itself, continue to grow and evolve as each generation puts its unique stamp on the world they have inherited.
